Hiya I bought a 2002 Rav last Friday and have since had to put £55 worth of petrol in to only do approx 180 miles. Is this the norm or are there any common problems I should be aware of as to why it is going so fast!!!

It is a GX 2L petrol - has anyone got any ideas?? Please please please help me.

Sorry forgot to mention, its an automatic.

Thank you in advance. :(

Hi Beechy and welcome to TOC. Think you may have a Problem there. What does the handbook say for mileage ?

Petrol versions I guess would get maybe high twenties, maybe thirties on a decent run. Being an auto I would think

mid twenties, but thats a guess. ;)

Well spotted RY54!

Beechy

Its about 15.5 mpg which on the face of it seems steep. However, you have to take several things into account. If you are only doing very short trips and not allowing it to warm up it will probably be only using low gears and with an enriched mixture.

Can you say more about how you have used it over the 180 miles?

Can you also say anything about the service history? My advice is to pop the air filter out and have a look if the car is new to you. If it looks in any way dirty chuck it out for what they cost to replace.

To do it lift the bonnet and undo the over-centre clips on the left side (as you look);

Then pull the enclosure forward and unhook the claws on the right side;

Let us know how you go on.

it's indeed a lot lf mpg. in my signature you will see live up to date mpg of both my rav 4's. they are both petrol & auto...

with the nrg i get over 320 miles with on 1 tank. my daily drive (more then 500 miles a week) is a bit town / motorway / country roads...

27 mpg since day 1 with mine. Can get just over 30 on a run. Usually fill up after 240 or so miles but once did 300 , economy is not a strong point. Just looked in the 2002 brochure and the auto is 1.5-2 mpg worse than the manual. Urban 22.8 Extra urban 37.2 Combined 30.4 for automatic.

but thats just the brochure ;) , my nrg 2003 auto combine is at the moment of writing 32.9 mpg... this is real calculations liters / miles... but of course this is depended of many things. :huh:

Thank you all, so, so much. i'll let you know how i go on. I need to check my air filter firstly, but another suggestion off a friend of mine is to fill it up with petrol that cleans the pipes etc (think he suggested a Shell petrol), then take it for a good motorway run, as I think it has been sat on the dealers forecourt for few months. This should hopefully get rid of most of the cobwebs.

Once again, thank you all so much for your replies, i'll keep you posted. Beechy. :D

I was quite shocked when I took on a Rav how quick the fuel gauge seemed to go down, having come from driving a diesel ford for ten years, but then I realised how short the journey to work had become. If the radio head mpg device is to be believed I get as little as 7mpg when accelerating foot to floor and as good as 47 on feather throttle in fifth. Full tank to full tank 32mpg on steady sensible driving, slightly better on constant motorway runs. Ive just had it dealer serviced so I will be interested to see if mine improves.
