Heater Fan And Steering Problem

I have a 2005 Avensis 2.0 D4D T4 but I am having to problems with it. The first problem is (which sounds the most expensive), the steering squeals (sounds like a belt slipping) and the power assist seems to momentarily stop and start when I am at really low speeds like parking or reversing. This only seems to occur when the car is cold or has been sitting for a few hours. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

The second issue is that the fan in the fan heater seems to have lost power. When I set the heating to Hi, the air is not blasting as it used to. Is there a current booster circuit to the fan control that might be defective?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Fan problem is probably down to the pollen filter being clogged....easy to check, open glove box, release the damper so box drops right down(ok all the gear falls out lol) behind this you will see the long horizontal edge of your pollen filter, just above the fan motor unit, IIRC there is a clip on the left hand side and the filter slides out. Clear all the leave etc from the filter (or replace) I bet that sorts it!

As Mkuko suggests this may well be your problem, but you don't point out if air from vents is staying at same level with fan switch in all its positions. If this is the case it may well also be your resistor unit, box like component with wound coil attached. Looks very much like a smaller version of a coil of an old bar fire. Depending on switch position resistance varies adjusting fan speed. As suggested take easy option first, remove pollen filter & you also might like to check nearside trim at bottom of screen for debri. Belt is straight forward to adjust loosen tensioner centre bolt & adjust tension bolt below pump. About 10 to 15 mm of movement in belt should do, don't over tighten or your pump bearings will not last very long. Have you checked your PAS level for fluid and followed pipes to make sure you have no leaks? You may be lucky could just be loose or worn belt, you don't point out if noise increases when on full lock. Another reason for squeal pump under full load at this point, pullies will spin quite freely within the belt at this point. Hope this helps.
