Hi Gareth and welcome to TOC, should have posted this in the Rav forum. Maybe one of the mods will move it for you.

Gareth

Is this the first time this has done it or been doing it for a while but turned it's self off eventually.

I thought the power to these was only on a switch so when the key was turned to the off and removed the power supply was cut....SHCM may be on later he knows more about the insides of the RAV wiring etc...

But if this is still doing it I would locate the fuse to remove so as not to get a flat Battery in these cold mornings we have now.....Well until it's fixed....

Welcome to the club as well.......

Welcome to TOC Gareth :)

Could you please update your profile, so we know which Rav 4 you have? That way, we'll all be able to help you.

Hi Gareth and welcome to the club.

I had a look at schematic drawings for 4.3 RAV and there are 2 supplies wires that feed into the sat nav, 1 from the Battery 20A rad No 1 and the other from accessories 7.5A

The only reason I can think of that would make the sat nav stay on is if wire had shorted between the 2 supplies wires or connections.

I am not sure of how to upload a pdf file or I would have posted a copy of drawings but I will try.

Hello Gareth and welcome,

(Why does everybody join when they have a problem? You would think they would join just for our sparkling wit and personalities ;) - I'm only kidding Gareth :D ).

Ok, as JHRC correctly states there are 2 supplies into the 4.3 nav unit and as Duncerduncs says if you can update your profile to include the actual vehicle model (have a look at what I or most of the regulars have), it may help us get you more specific information. If you have the nav unit model (probably something like B9003 or B9004) on the front even better.

Anyway, JHRC's suggestion is one possibility. The two "supplies" are usually a permanent Battery supply and an ignition switched supply. For many bits of auto electronics, they are never really "off" as such, just in a low power state (a bit like your TV in standby, but a lot more care is taken to minimise the energy used in this state). The switched "supply" is not really a power supply but more of a "request" signal. When it has 12V on it, it is saying to the unit "wake up please". When the 12V is removed it is saying "shut down please".

It's not uncommon for an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to have to do some "tidying up" internally, before it puts itself into "standby". Now, I'm just wondering whether that was your problem and the nav unit was having problems completing its "shut down" tasks.

Now, the solution after perhaps this unnecessarily long winded answer has already been suggested. Pull the fuse (on the permanent Battery feed), wait a few minutes then pop it back in an try again. The nav unit may well go thorough (I hope!) a "reboot" operation that you don't normally see. Don't switch off the accessories, let it complete that first.

The other thing is to make sure that your disks (DVD/CD) are clean. Also, with this cold days maybe they get fogged up a little?

I'm surprised it didn't turn off eventually. These things usually have what's called a "watchdog" so that if the processor locks up, the ECU can reset itself.

Hope that helps

Cheers
