Picked it up last week, new to diesel engines so seems strange to drive.

whats the best technique , if there is one , to get the best speed . Seems to be best to change gear soooooo early which is hard to get used to.

Run it in first

Vary the revs

Dont go higher than 3, 3.5krpm max for the first 600 miles.

Then gradually increase revs up to 1000 miles

Keep varying the revs

Dont race engine till 1k

Dont use cruise control till 1.5k miles

Driving it,

You dont have to change that early really,

Providing you have at least 1.8krpm on the REV counter you have plenty of shove and go

Use anything between 1.8k and 2.5k to overtake, take it up to 4k and change gear and you will make good progress

Taking it past 4k is pointless, by that point the engine cannot get enough air / turbo isn't big enough to maintain power and your progress is numbed and when you change you have a shorter rev range.

3rd gear will take you from 30 to 70 very very quickly, its your best friend :)

In town, changing around 2.2k just after the green light blips will keep the car under control from all the torque available which is too much in town.

Open the road up a bit and changing at 2.5 maybe 3k will give you good steady progress without feeling like granny shifting.

The key is to know how to use the low down REV stuff, around 2k and you get incredible torque, learn how to use that and get used to it and the car is transformed.

Coming from petrol it seems mind boggling to think you should overtake with 1.8k on the rpm counter but once you accept that things will be different.

Thanks for the reply , it does seem weird to overtake at low revs. Seems hard to get used to not hearing the engine scream, its only when u look at the speed that u know just how rapid it is.

tell me about it

i even drove a mini copper s the other day; apart from uttlerly hating it the engine note was screaming and i looked at the speedo and i was only doing around 45 in second gear.

THe T180 would get up to 45 in absolutely no time and you wouldn't hear a damm thing.
