Anchorman's Dmf Post

Anchorman, I see you've now pinned the DMF info and I have to say it is a very interesting and informative read. Well done Mate  (Mind you, we expect nothing less :P ). Have you ever thought about tech authoring?

I have to say, before I joined this forum, I knew nothing about DMFs (some would say I'm lucky), not even their existence, that is certainly not the case now.

My biggest worry was always the "nasty rubber" cam belts, so I was pleased when they went back to a chain (why did VMs go to rubber in the first place? noise? weight?). Now I have something else to worry about :D.

Seriously, it's a good piece of work and lets hope Toyota have learned from it. I know from experience how much care and testing goes into these things (and the Japanese are exceptional at this IMHO), but with all the care and accelerated life testing, it's still not quite the same as "out in the field" and sometimes things just slip through. We're all human!

Maybe this is still not quite right (and it seems to apply to all diesels), but I'm sure eventually a robust solution will be found, if indeed it hasn't been found already with the improved procedures and designs. Time will tell.

In the meantime enjoy you vehicles and don't get hung up on it (easy for me to say). I'm not going to.

Well done again :)

Thanks chaps.

I have to say that TGB were very helpful in providing information and comment but the important thing was to try and cover all possibilities. As shcm says a lot of people don't even know they have one let alone why they are forking out a small fortune to replace one. In some ways it makes our life easier (and maybe some Toyota service staff) because we can just refer them to the post when it pops up although it is quite natural for anybody to get emotive about so much expense.

To try and answer the question about timing belts - chains were originally unreliable partly due to the technology and partly due to inadequate oils. Moving to a rubber belt resolved that to some extent and brought the benefit of geting the drive mechanisim "outside" of the engine. It also meant the could be used to drive many other components and allow some fairly complex routing on multi cam engines. If you have ever turned a cam shaft you will know that it is a "pig" as they pop over the cams to the next lobe and you can imagine that on high lift cams that causes very uneven turning which to some extent is damped out with a rubber belt. However it is widely acknowledged that the service life of a belt is limited (usually 60k to 75k) and those that have had it done usually get presented with a bill for about £600 with the appropriate service. Modern engines have gone back to chains because a modern multi link width chain is very reliable especially when used with modern synthetic oils. All the other components are now driven on the outside by a serpentine belt which functions by having a flat section multi vee profile and is wrapped around approx 270 degrees of each pulley but is only tensioned by a spring loaded pulley. The result is astonishingly long life - maybe 100k or more.

You ask bothy how many times he had to raid some poor maidens tights to lash around the pulley's of that Humber Hawk.

Now Dave.

I find your accolade very flattering but it's not good for somebody who remembers Humber Hawks being new. However, there is life in the old dog yet and I could show her a thing or two about engines in all of about seven seconds :spiteful:

Don't think anchorwoman would approve much of my new apprentice.

Thanks for the cam belt explanation Anchorman. Often wondered why, but never got a good answer before

A lucid and interesting piece of writing, anchorman. We have a post-2002 model so hope and trust that we won't have any dmf problems of the pre-2002 sort, but as you say, other kinds of problems are not inconceivable with such a complex piece of kit. Either way, my husband (a mechanical engineer) and I both enjoyed reading your article.

How you find the time to keep making such excellent contributions to the forum I do not know, but it is much appreciated.

Until then I can do without spark plugs, limp strings of carbon (HT leads) and large inductance coils. :D

Cheers
