Intermittent Starting Problem Plus Overdrive Ha

Hi all,

I have a lovely old gen4 Celica (2.0 Auto) that runs like a dream..when it starts anyhow.

Quite often I go to start her and all I hear is what I assume is the fuel pump working.

The Battery is new, the starter has been replaced, and quite often I'll wait half an hour and she'll start like a dream and will never cut out once started.

There seems to be no logic to when this will happen..I could be on a long drive, stop for fuel and she won't start, or sometimes she'll do this when cold.

The other niggly thing is that the overdrive doesn't seem to work..or does sometimes too depending on her mood. In my dreams I'm hoping that these are related and will be repaired by replacing a very cheap fuse ;)

Thanks for your time,

Dom

does the starter crank ok , when at the time of not starting ???

Hi GT4,

No, and there is no 'tick tick' of a starter solenoid trying to engage...nothing, but the electrics work, lights are OK and I can hear the wine of the fuel pump.

It happened at the supermarket the other night with the car loaded up with Christmas shopping. I tried prodding around in the engine bay to see if it was a faulty earth, but with only a screwdriver in the car I decided to call the AA up to see if they could sort it out. 15 minutes before they were due to arrive she fires up as if there was never a problem.

The car is teasing me, the saucy minx,

I'm baffled...

I have been looking around forums and have heard mention that the alarm system can disable the engine.

There is a little LED on the dash but I don't think this has been working since I had the car...there is also 'road alert alarm system' written on the window. Does anyone have any experience of this system, how to disable it etc?

Cheers all...from a very cold London
