As a <very> new owner of a 1996 Rav 4 (petrol) I was wondering what sort of MPG I should be expecting. I know it's a bit of an open ended question given the age of the car, but I'd appreciate acceptable guidelines.

Regards

Vasilikon...welcome to TOC...and we operate a no waiting patient scheme here...nurse will be along soon...

Firstly what size right shoe do you take has this can have a detrimental effect on the MPG....But I would say you should be getting between 32 and 35mpg....

Having been in Cyprus some years ago for a holiday, you're hardly likely to get much motorway cruising done so I'd guess at around 30mpg - just depends how you drive it. If you thrash it, then obviously you get less. Also whether you are carrying 6 passengers, a mule and a sack of tomatoes.....

What mileage has the car done...and has it always been on Cyprus cos the cars there last 50+ years!!

We have a 98 petrol 5dr and can get anything between 20 and 40 mpg. The worst figure was on a fully loaded run cruising at around the ton, the best on a gentle cruise with an empty car to Norwich and back, though I did have the aircon on - I average what Chatman says otherwise.

As far as I can tell, the car has always been in Cyprus. It's got 84,000 km on the clock and, to all intents & purposes, it's in immaculate condition. There's a worrying "clunk" from the backend when changing from 1st to 2nd, but doesn't appear to be there in other changes. If you've been in Cyprus, you'll remember that you can get to most major places on tarmac of varying quality, but if you want to go anywhere interesting, you need good ground clearance.

I must apologise for the seemingly numpty questions, but until redundancy forced/permitted the move i had been driving company cars for the last twenty years, so my knowledge is severley limited.

Regards

Ye - we rented what i remember was a Suzuki jeep. Had to take it back for another and we upgraded to what i think was a Mistubushi jeep. Defo good ground for off-roading and loads of interesting placed and beaches. The clunk you get will likely be one of the bearings at the rear. The rear diff is mounted by one of the rubber type things which wear and allow the diff to slightly rotate/rock back and forward. It might be that it needs replaced - its a kind of half hollow rubber bush. There is some stuff that you can get which effectively tightens up the movement on that joint as the guys in The Garage in Wishaw near me used it to limit diff rocking.

With that mileage, and the terrain of the roads, I wouldn't be surprised if it might be one of the rear suspension mounting bushes. Don't think anything major will happen, but I'd get a local trustworthy mechanic to take a quick look at it and check the mountings.

And I suppose with the dusty roads, checking the air filter and changing the oil would be a good idea.

Good luck. Wish I was there I can tell you. I've a supplier who goes there frequently from Glasgow to do his disco bit and sets up websites. Twas one of the best holidays we ever had!!

I reckon that anything over 30 mpg is a bonus, running around town and over 60 on a run doesn't help.

As for Scottish Kevin and Perry wasn't it Crawford and Fraser.:lol::lol::yawn:

Hahaha - very good.

As for mileage - with the turbo now boosted, and the way i am driving it, I don't bother thinking too hard about mpg; rather gpm !!
