New 2.0 D4d (6 Speed) Gears A Bit Clunky

Hi All

I have a new 2.0d4d 6 speed tourer which is great, particularly quiet on the motorway and reasonably nippy now after 1500 miles with 49.5 mpg average around town. It did seem a bit slow when it was brand new. The only issue I have is that the gears are a bit clunky and vague sometimes although improving. If you are stationary and you press the clutch in neutral all you can hear is the engine but when you release the clutch you can sometimes hear a fast ticking noise. Any advice or experience on this?

Many Thanks

i have noticed that they are clunky as well but not all the time. 1st to 2nd is really smooth but 5th to 6th isnt. maybe it is because i am getting used to it as well. mine hasnt used a tank of fuel yet so i carnt check the mpg but the digital readout only says 42.4mpg and i have done a couple of motorway trips. the range suggests i will get 510 (ish) miles though so i reckon it will be around 46mpg when it comes to filling up. if you are getting nearly 50mpg i would be pleased with that.

how accurate is the readout as on my old avensis it read 3 or 4 mpg more then what it really did. in that case i should be expecting 38mpg. :(

do you use the cruise control? i wondered if it made any difference to the fuel economy if it was used.

cheers

My t180 is a bit clunky going 1st to second. The car has only done 2500 miles so could still be bedding in. It feels just like the clutch aint pushed in enough. It gets its first service in january so i will mention it then. MPG is a sore point at the moment my 1.8 t3x would do mid-to high 30's around town and high 40's on a run at the moment i'm getting around 30mpg no matter what.

Hi Steve,

30 mpg seem extremely low (I am taking it is a diesel engine?). I am wondering as I am the replace the glow plugs whether I would see improved fuel consumption, currently I am doing 46-47 mpg combined on a 2.0 D4D (2003) engine.

Cheers,

John

My T180 has now done 12,000 and gives 37 on average according to the computer. Long motorway journeys can puh this up a bit, have had 43, but the next time I leave the lights I tend to undo all the hard work.

30 seems a bit low.

30 does seem low indeed - try manually calculating it looking at your millage from last fill up to latest fill up and look on latest fill up and how many litres used to fill up. Then getting the correct conversion from litres to gallons you can work out your true MPG. However, the trip computer on my T180 is almost perfect.

I reckon if it was just 30mpg you would be lucky to get 400 miles out of a tank at best. My T180 around town does only get around 35 on average on short stop start journeys. But i am always on longer jounrneys so i see around 40mpg now its winter. Better in summer again.

Gear change is also clunky between 1st and 2nd for me too. I think its something to do with the syncromesh and just a characteristic of the box.

The D4D engines are very tight when new and you would expect a much lower fuel consumption, I have never heard of one only doing 30 mpg! Work it out manually as a double check. Not sure about your ticking noise but the D4D engines are noisy, particularly when cold, it's just a charecteristic not a fault

It says on the computer its 378 miles per tank. Like i say it goes in for its service next month so i'll mention it to them then. Thanks for your reply about the gearbox, has it happened i drove a 2.2 t3x that came into work for service and that was the same clunky change. I like the car its just the mpg. I will do a manual working out next time i fill up. At present the mpg has gone upto just short of 32mpg. Both readings are a mixture of driving, but its an improvment. I'm thinking cos its done such low mileage in 12 months it just needes a good run. The previous onwer only did 2500 miles in the car .
