Just thought i'd share some pics of my Corolla GTi - Bought it last week off a chap thats had it 8 years - Cars only covered 71,000 miles however the rust is killing it..... So gonna give it to mate and see if he can bring it ip to its former glory...!! You cant tell in the pics but the roof/bonnet have faded quite badly.... Still due to the low mileage and it only having 2 owners i thought it would be a shame not to give it the TLC it deserves.. Totally standard with no mods at all - Still has the Original Tape player

Its been a while since i have owned one but i seriously forgot how smooth the GTi drives...

Just had it fully serviced: Cambelt - Oil - Oil Filter - Air Filter - Plugs - All genuine Toyota parts of course

here's a few pics...

Good to hear! I have 1 the exact same with 73000miles on it. Red with the rear arches rusted too(Not as bad)

How much did it set ya back if ya don't mind me asking??

Considering it's quite low millage I am supprised how much its rusted arround the edges - I'd check rear suspension mounts and rear of sills in view of this.

In view of you being 'in the trade' I take it you know that you will never get your money back when you come to sell one of these after you have done it up.

As you say they are a smooth drive (and great fun) but unfortunately at present they seem to be vertually worthless on the open market even if in good condition (and probably why I've stuck with mine for over 14 years  )

Good luck with the project.

looking at it its never been waxed, the water is sheeting rather than beading.

Going completely off topic here but -

Do I spy the back end in one of those pictures of one of those lovely Subaru WRX's?

Those are quite amazing machines especially if the 'new age' version; not so keen on the 'classic shape' (and I hate using the word 'Classic shape' as they're still under 25 year old as yet so how the term 'classic' can be applied to them beats me  )- tend to suffer a lot of problems (and a lot tend to be 'dodgy jap' imports!) but the 'new age' (2001 onwards - Bug eye, blob eye and hawk eye) are a really well sorted machine!

Nice Motah!

Not one to gice away secrets though have you seen how much the Gti's are advertised for on autotrader.ie ? I know the AE86's make a mint though these can command strong money over there too, some of mine have ended up in Ireland, inc my RWD Starlet.

Oh right.

Thing is round where I live 80's cars struggle to fetch any money (nether new or 'classic') just considered 'bangers' regardless of condition (e.g. A Toyota Corolla GTi with FSH, Low millage and original nice clean body work in excellent condition with full MOT would struggle to even reach £400).

Thats why a lot of cars 15-20 year old cars are scrapped now, nothing really wrong with them. Due to value a full set of tyres and an exhaust plus a service is more than the car is worth - a shame - and wastefull!

In fact these days the cars that are in the scrappy are better than what I used to run on the road!

This is True!

I live in Ireland and they start at about e1,300 and can reach e5,500. I sold 1 for 4,000 last year and the prices are going up every year. I have a 73,000 miles one that i am restoring. Fitted new Front wings, New Sunroof panel, rear acrhes taken back to bare metal and weld on sheet metal. NEW Discs and pads all round, 2 new rear shocks. New factory remote Central locking(like on all new toyota) Has orginal radio and alloys.Whole things is polished to a mirror shine and bottom waxxed. I will easily get 4,500 for it!!

Bought from eBay in N Ireland for 1,800E,VRT here is 632E, Parts 500-600E! Did all the work myself.

So Cost me 3,000 and i could get 5.000!and its alot of fun!!! I'll post pics soon and you can see the amount of work!

Well peeps - finally picked the Gti up from my painters yesterday and i have to admit he has done a top job and i'm well pleased with the results...!! I got a bit carried away with what i wanted doing to it so took a bit longer than i expected but well worth it...!! Car went to basically a bare Shell respray, new front wings and one rear panel... EVERYTHING but the roof painted... All alloys refurb'd (including the spare) fully undersealed / waxoyled etc..etc.. Really is looking like new again...

Pics to follow

Wow! Thats real nice.. Thats what they looked like new. Nice one :D

The way these beggars rot, i'd dip the car in waxoil and lose it in a shed for a while. So many people seem to be experiencing the same thing. The rust, and like what a few people have said here. Cars in a redeemable state are getting squisshed by the scrap yard..

Time to find another with rot, and do the same. I think.

We are looking at a crucial period in time here. You can still pick a Gti-16 with FSH and rot for under £500. Give it another 5 years and a lot more of them Gti-16's going to the scrapper through rust issues. Its a matter of time, but i believe the Gti-16 will end up as expensive as a decent mk1 escort. Just a matter of grabbing them now and stopping that rot!!

luks a real minter! what i would do is invest a few quid and buy a new white pin stripe. trust me you wont believe how much of a difference a new pinstripe can make it look

cheers bud..

It has a new stripe on it in silver which is the original colour that comes on the red gti's.. I have tried to keep it as standard as possible with no changes whatsoever.... I even got my painter to very carefully mask up the 'gti-16' stickers on the doors so i wouldnt have to replace them...even though they can be had from toyota...

Thanks

Rash.

p.s. anyone got the plastic part where the window switsh is on the drivers doorcard.. mine has cracked in half...!!
