Is It A Steering Wheel Or Mouse?

Hello,

I have a 2.0L T4, 54 reg, with a niggling noise problem - when I turn the steering wheel (even just a few degrees left or right) it makes a relatively loud squeaking/rubbing sound. It doesn't matter whether the engine is running or not. It has gotten worse over the last couple of weeks - I used to just turn up the radio to drown it out but fear going deaf if it gets any worse!

I have searched the forum, but most deal with older cars or the electric assisted steering of the 1.8. Can anyone offer any help/advice please?

Look side-on at the back of the steering wheel and make sure there's a gap between the back of it and the plastic steering column shroud (so it doesn't rub and squeak). If there is it may be internal fouling on the spiral cable housing etc.

I had the same problem only when the engin was running; my brother who is a motor mechanic looked at it, and found that it was tension arm on the power steering which keeps a belt tight it took him about an hour to fix it. as lots of covers had to be removed to get to it to tighten it up

Hope this of some help. Paul J

Hi I have a 54 reg T3x which has developed the same squeak from the steering wheel. Did you find out what was the cause?. Was it the suggested belt.

Regards

Never found out what the cause is - when the car was last 'serviced' I told the dealer who said he would fix it. He said that he smeared some lubricant somewhere inside the car and that fixed it. It may as well have been on the passenger head rest because when driving away, considerably poorer, it was exactly the same as before. Anyway, the noise comes and goes - at the moment it is being quiet and here's hoping it stays that way.

Hi there,I have the same problem.

Can you tell me how much the part cost and what tool was used to remove and replace as I heard you need a special gadget that of course only Toyota main dealers have, but apparently there are ways round this.

Thanx
