New Brake Discs At 30k Miles?

I've just complained to my Toyota dealer after being told my brake discs need changing after only 30k miles on my '05 Corolla Verso T spirit 2.0D4D. Pads sure I would expect them to go, but not discs!

I've been driving 30 years and have never had this before. Are Toyota using substandard components? Am I the only one that's experienced this? I notice that obviously discs are not covered by warranty.

At £304 for just the front, I will be thinking carefully about my next choice of car. I bought Toyota partly because the cost of running was better than its rivals and its reputation for quality.

I had not costed £300 every 30K miles for brake discs!!

Toyota never use substandard components!

Since asbestos was banned, there has always been a trade off between wear rate and brake efficiency, one down side to the new style brake pads is that they are very hard, and will often wear out brake discs too. This is not uncommon across the whole motor industry. Your discs could be skimmed, subject to them being over minimum thickness

New discs and pads for your model are £213.30 retail. We can supply them to you for £179.80, let me know if you are interested, ETA would be 3 days

Are the discs quoted specially multi-drilled and grooved performance brake discs or the same type fitted from new?

If the latter I think I'd rather spend my hard earned cash on performance discs instead and will insist on them being fitted as standard on my new car next year.

I found this link that suggests many motor companies are using substandard brake discs!

http://www.carpages.co.uk/news/performance...cs-25-03-05.asp

It suggests perhaps motor companies like Toyota could do more!

Are the disc quoted specially multi-drilled and grooved performance brake discs or the same type fitted from new?

2005 information..............I think that Toyota has better quality control than that.

BTW did you note the following:

We supply genuine Toyota replacements because we are a Toyota dealer, I would'nt be able to supply multi drilled and grooved discs as I have no information on there quality, they could be sub-standard. Just because somebody calls them "performance discs" doesn't mean they are good quality. Toyota's discs and pads have the full backing of the manufacturers warranty.

So how long in your expert experienced opinion would you expect a set of front brake discs last.

In my humble opinion and that of most of my friends (one who owns a garage) it should be a lot more than 30k miles.

How long you should get out of wear and tear items is always an emotive subject, nobody likes paying out to replace items you think should have lasted longer. It all depends on your driving style and the type of driving you do. IMHO, looking at our using of these particular part numbers, we seem to sell twice as many pads to discs, so maybe yours would be suitable for skimming with a new set of pads, that would depend how deep the scoring was on your discs. I have known far worse cases than yours, especially on the French makes, where discs, pads, shocks seem to be particularly vulnerable. Onboard skimming is a very cost effective way of sorting out disc warpage/wear and could save you some money, have it assessed to see if it is appropriate for your car.

I have also had problems with my corolla d4d t-spirit, 2002 model.

It had the discs skimmed when i first got it, new front discs and pads, new rear discs and pads at 38,000 miles.

I used Pentagon Toyota at Rotherham they are quite good, but stay away fromPenatgon, barnsley, baugh green, they damaged my wing while it was in having the discs done, looked like they had spilled brake fluid down the wing, looked like the paint had gone soft and the re -set there was a straight line down the wing, they still have not contacted me to remedy the damage, also after 1 day i had to take my car to toyota Rotherham as the brakes were binding on the rear, they said they had been over adjusted slightly,it is a problem with the corolla if you overtighten them they can bind they said.

I only went to Barnsley as Rotherham Pentagon had no MOT bay as it was flooded.

Hi I have just had my 30k service on my Corolla 2006 2.0 D-4D. The discs and pads were 90% worn on the front and Toyota Jemca Sidcup quoted me £330 to change them.

The discs were badly lipped. I changed the discs and pads myself, bought some Mintex pads and discs and it cost £101. The Mintex brakes are much much better I have noticed than the original Toyota brakes!

Either buy different discs and pads and let your toyota dealer fit them or take it to Mr Clutch who quoted me £65 to change the discs and the pads if I supplied the parts.

I had to change my front discs and pads on my 04 Corolla TSport at about 32k, afaik there the same ones they use on the d4d corollas. I just went for 3g Discs and black diamond pads they should last longer, cheaper than the standards and have alot better braking peformance too.

Oh dear. My Verso is due its 30K service next week. From what I'm reading here it's quite likely I'm going to be stung for some new brake discs.... :(

Hi , I have a Verso 2006 2.2 diesel. I too have groves in my back discs, I read on a toyota forum, I'm not sure which one, that Toyota used "hard" pads which caused the problem, further it was claimed Toyota were aware of this AND if asked would replace then under warranty.

I am taking mine in this week to have said job done.

DON'T let them get away with it, I printed out the forum page & took it to my garage and they "put their hands up" and acknowledged the problem.

We pay enough for the car in the first place we do not expect these kind of problems certianly not from a giant like Toyota.

Let me know how you get on.

EDIT have just noticed thread headed "Scored Discs on New Car" , this is where I obtained my info quoted above !!

Had no problem with the performance of my brakes March 06 Verso 2.2 T3 until last month. On return from 70 mile round trip to L'pool Airport, the brakes started grinding noticably. Also on emergency braking the action of the ABS was FAR from smooth! Took it in for scheduled and prebooked 20K service to RRG Salford Quays with note to that effect. Received a phone call a couple of hours later to say that they had skimmed the disks and to report if any further problems were noticed. This they did F.O.C. (included in the price of the service) as I would have expected in any case. I only read this thread after this had been done but I thought I would add this note. The disks look OK and no longer grind or judder under heavy braking, but I hope the disks last longer than 30K. I will read threads more frequently after this experience.

Not too sure if this will help but I'm from Ireland and was driving a 2004 Toyota Avensis 1.6 petrol last year and had a problem with the brakes grinding as if the pads were completely worn. I normally do all my own servicing and when I checked the pads found that there were fine....not even half worn. There was however an inch wide scoring on both the back disk's. I went to my local Toyota dealer and they changed all disk's and pads including the front under warranty. :) Spoke to the mechanic and he told me that Toyota are having this problem across the corolla and avensis range. I have heard of several more friends of mine who have the same work done by toyota under warranty. no problems. If available in Ireland I would assume that Toyota UK should supply the same service.

The juddering under braking is the disks after warping. This occurrs after braking hard approaching traffic lights or something like that and then when stopped keeping your foot on the pedal. The disk cools but where the pads are it stays hot and the difference in temp causes the disk to warp. The other reason it can happen is going through a flood of water, and the water cooling the disks unevenly.

skimming fixes the prob but I have heard of it happening again. keep an eye on it. hope this helps
