hi im here on behalf of a friend who doesnt know how to use forums, he owns a 2003 rav4 which has a strange problem, it only happens once in a blue moon but could b fatal, he can be driving down the road and all of a sudden the engine management light comes up and the engine cuts out, toyota hav tried alot of times to fix it including sensors etc, but they now think its a turbo problem (apparently they cant work it out from their computer) but i would of said as a turbo is mechanical it would either work or not work not fail intimitantly???

anyone experienced the same problem at all???

thanks tom

sorry forgot to say its a diesil d-4d

Het Tom_ibiza welcome to the club.....

I would be looking at fuel problem first.....Maybe wrong but I had similar problem but no cutting out...was too do with the High Pressure fuel pump..would work fine then all of a sudden slow right down...Engine light came on...then like driving with a 50ton weight behind RAV (Or towing a load of three door scapped RAV's...joke in there for Bothy's enjoyment) stick around long enough and your see) any how...any other information would be a help...

Is the RAV based in ibiza as there might be sand in the air filter etc....just a thought...

Other members may be along soon.....

O just one more thing...Is it a 5door RAV Diesel....Just out of interest.... :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

*UPDATE*

i was wrong engine doesnt cut out it just slows down with very little acceleration and the dials just kick back down to zero, then once you turn off the ignition and turn it back on it works again

as i said all seems a bit crazy and dont understand how it can be the turbo????

Hello Tom

The best thing is to get it to someone who has a OBD11 reader. This will pull up the diagnostic trouble codes and point you in the right direction. The turbo has a variable rate mechanism (if you look it has a vacuum chamber attached with a link to the body of the turbo). Under various throttle positions and engine loads the vac unit will move the link and it is connected internally to a series of flaps that resemble the petals of a flower. The flaps can be opened or closed to vary the amount of turbo boost. If something sticks or doesn't function properly then there are various sensors that will measure under or over boost pressure and these in turn may shut the engine down to prevent damage.

It should all be recorded in the ECU memory.

Regards

hi ya mate , i had the same problem on a ford focus , used to be fine the all of a sudden it would lose a lot of power . took a long time to sort it out , like you i would turn it off back on then it would be fine , any way the problem was a speedo senser, the speedo would suddenly drop to zero at the same time as lose of power , had a new speedo sencor fitted £ 25 , which solved the problem,

hope this help
