D4d Missfire

hello i have just got a d4d estate which is a great family car for me as this is my first deisel i am still getting used to it. The problem i am having is what feels like a missfire between 1400rpm and 1700 rpm this only happens when cold and not always as bad, a couple of times when left to run for a few mins before setting of it didnt do it at all. Also if you give it a bit more gas it seems to smooth out it seems at its worst on light throttle gentley moving off. The car has full history with toyota the last service only 2 months ago, the car is three years old in jan but is out of warranty having coverd 73k so i dont realy want to take it to the main dealers as i have be stung by diog charges in the past, then they say they cant find any fault so if there is anyone that can help it would be greatley appreciated.

Hi there

Could it be not so much a misfire as a "hole" in acceleration as the boost kicks in

Mine has a definate flat spot around low revs, could this be the reason (solution try someone else's and see if that has it)

Let us know what happens

Cheers

Buzlby

No its not a flat spot before the turbo comes in it feels like proper missfire i sat for a while today with the car warm and raised the revs slowley to about 1600rpm and there is still something there more like something is out of balance. When cold it is just like a missfire on a petrol car i have been told it could be just a sticking injector and to try a fuel treatment first so i have stuck one in today as it has a full tank and see how it goes.

Hi Glod. I have a very similar proplem as yourself on my 2004 Avensis D4D and it has been an ongoing issue since February this year. Like yourself, I noticed a judder/missfire which starts at around 35mph in 4th gear and eventually goes away again when I reach 40mph (1600-1800rpm). This is much more noticable when the engine is cold, but can still be felt slightly once the engine has warmed up. I took the car to my local Toyota dealer, who failed to identify the problem, but put some injector cleaner into the fuel tank. The injector cleaner made no difference, so when my service was due, I mentioned the problem again and they tracked it down to a faulty injector which was replaced under warranty. The following day when the engine was cold, the problem was still there, but not quite so bad so I went back to the dealer who ran another diagnostic on the car and said that there was nothing wrong with it, but they put some more injector cleaner in the tank 'just in case'.

I eventually gave up and decided to learn to live with the problem, but now that the cold weather is upon us, the problem is worse than ever and the car is with the dealer overnight so they can take it out tomorrow when it's cold and see if they can track the problem down once and for all. In the meantime, I have been loaned a 1.0 litre base model Aygo as a punishment for my moaning :crybaby:

When I get some news I'll let you know.

Thanks very much for this info i was starting to think i was going mad after the injector cleaner it has become very hit and miss as to when it happens. I am thinking of taking out an extended warranty just in case if it is an injector fault i am sure it will cost more for the injector than the warranty so please let me know how you go on Thanks.

make sure that if any injectors are changed they are re-coded to the ecu.

on the D4D each injector is 'tagged' to the ecu and if not re coded the engine will not run correctly and use more fuel
