Cts Vs Lcr

New year and new car time. iv my choices narrowed down to 3( mk4 astra gsi/ corolla tsport/ leon cupra r) but prob go with the cts or lcr. i like the cts as its fairly solid and reliable and lower insurance rating and i like the lcr as it has a 225bhp audi tt engine, is reliable but maybe a little less so than the cts but is more expensive to buy/run/insure. looking for opinions and experiences on the vaux and lcr compared to the cts.

Don't know much about the astra tbh but i'm busy trying to convince the boss lady to get rid of her little polo and get a Cupra R right now, and if I had to choose between the Cupra and the CTS now, I would be incredibly tempted by the Cupra tbh.

My next car is probably going to be an Audi.

T sport a nice car but when i goes wrong its expensive but most cars are now, prob wont be as quick off the mark as the astra or the seat, wont be far behind thou and it will be easier to shift on in ireland because its a toyota as long as you dont ask crazy money like some people! People say there a bit soft suspension wise but thats nearly a better thing with the roads over here. There not soft soft but it wont brake your a*se like a type r. Vrt on them isnt to bad either if your looking at bringing one in.

ya its very tempting espically with the TT engine in it can be remapped to 260ish with no probs. according to the owners site the internals are good to 300hp but it would be crazy in a fwd. trying to figure out if its worth the extra money and hope i dont buy a lemon. always more chance of problems with turbos than n/a

im living iin northern ireland for the next year then moving down south so wont be paying vrt once i keep it for 12 months after i return back home. i wont be racing or track daying (well no plans to) but wondering if the lcr will be worth the extra money if its more fun to drive

Seeing as you not going to pay VRT i guess its which one will make the most money when you finished, both good cars. Can be snobby here thou,if it no Jap or German they don't want to know, what kind of money are the seat making here?

If it would cost me the same to run then I would have a LCR over my Corolla any day of the week.

But it wouldn't, so I bought the Corolla.

You pays your money you makes your choice. :)

there going for about £9k in uk so id guess same car would be €15k in RoI. the vrt on both cars is the same so id be getting the same 'discount' by fbringing it in. its running costs that would differ most, fuel, servicing, etc. so nobody has experienced one yet then. trying to figure if its worth the extra money. suppose could have fun with the tsport for 12 months and see how i get on

it may be a little faster not much in it, had a run in with one today on way home from work nothing in it, not sure what engine it had. just said cupra r on the back.

also i may be wrong but i would choose the corolla anyday due to its reliability, never heard a good thing said about seat tbh. mam had an ibiza and was glad to get rid of it.

If your spending 9 k sterling you'd nearly get a compressor for that. Normal 190bhp dont make that much money over there so you'd prob be able to go up in the years with a t sport as well, lots of 05 for that money on autotrader. But if i had a lcr parked outside beside the corolla on the same plate,no contest lcr every time,be a faster car. Havnt driven a lcr but i have driven an octavia vrs,my mates, same engine but with 180bhp,quick and nice having power low down. Two cars foot to the floor(we tried it) nothing in it . Both on a rolling start. Also he can get 40ish if sensible on long run because he has cruise control, dont know was that an option on t sport, prob was on cupra r being from same family as skoda so your fuel bill mite not be to bad

I've drivin a cupra r and i'd have it over a gsi, sport and compressor. It's faster (not sure if it's faster than a compressor) and the handling is better in every area, better brakes, suspension, overall response, wheels (than a sport, cant speak for anything else). People talk about the Badge but forget it has a VW engine, never known them to have any major reliability issues in recent years. Value for money wise a think the cupra r and sport are equal.

it hasnt a vw engine it has an audi engine. the cupra has the golf gti 1.8T 180bhp engine. the cupra r has the 1.8t engine from a TT/S3 with 225 bhp

VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat nearly all identical engine, 20v turbo unit. 225bhp has a larger turbo and intercooler and few other internal bits because of the extra turbo boost but basically the same engine as octavia/golf and cupra. Earlier versions of that engine suffered from ignition coils failing and also turbos used to blow on them, could be to do with people not letting them cool down after parking up. Had a prob with oil sludge blocking oil channels to turbo which caused failures as well

cupra and cupra r have pretty much the same engine. All are derived from a VW platform.

the cupra and golf fti share an engine but the cupra R is a completely different engine from the s3/tt. it is a common misconception that its the same engine remapped with a bigger turbo.

Completely different is stretching it. I presume you mean the engines from the old TT as the current model doesn't use the 1.8T engine. But in that case I'm pretty sure they're basically the same engine with some of the key components uprated, more intercooling and a different turbo.

In any case, they're still VW engines, as technically are the engines in most other Audis, Seats, Skodas, Lambos etc, etc.

S3/TT engine is part of the VW A4 platform, as is the 1.8T Cupra. There is not MUCH difference pal, none the less, it is still a VW engine.

  • 5 months later...

I used to have an old shape Cupra (only the 180bhp version though) - it seemed to suffer from wheel spin if you tried to push it too hard from a standing start and I didn't think the performance and handling were really all that special... but better than a CTS.

The big problem I found with the Cupra was the build quality though, I was expecting something really solid and reliable but mine developed a few problems that seemed pretty common with other Cupras and Cupra Rs (suspension, knocking noises, coils, etc.)

I wouldn't mind test driving a new shape Cupra just to see if they've improved the package. The photos don't look so good though so I suspect they're not much better than the old shape.
