Will Not Start

HELP :help:

My Avensis D4D (september 2004 22000 miles) will not start when warm. It starts ok from cold, runs perfect for 12 miles home from work. I pull up in front of garage, open garage door, car will not START. I go in to have dinner, then back out to car. After a bit of a struggle it starts. Next morning starts first time when cold.

Thanks Paul J

I'm not positive but it souns like your starter motor, I think it's to do with the thermal expansion which is why it's OK when cold.

Quite a few people have had a similar problem if I remember correctly.

Do a search on "starter motor" in the avensis forums and there should be a few other threads on the subject.

Good luck.

My starter motor turns the engine but it feels like some immobilizer is stopping the motor from starting as if it is not getting any diesel to the engine. I will not be using it much over the Christmas New Year I will keep you posted in the new year happy Christmas

Have the same problem started doing this during the summer when in warranty has got worse but exactly the same symptoms. (2004 D4D 25K) Went to see Mr T but could not look at it until January so I decided to investigate! Concluded it could be starter motor because apparently if the engine doesn't turn over fast enough it will not even attempt to fuel up. Took starter off car today and dismantled it. Noted it was made in Italy! Anyway the bearing on the end of the armature shaft is completely stuffed. Luckily I have the facilities to make a new bearing and overhaul the starter. I have now put it back together but not in the car until tomorrow. I think I have found the problem. Rumor has it that Mr T is replacing a lot of these - I think I would like one made in Japan. I think this starter will not last that long but the repair will at least prove the fault.
