Uneven Tyre Wear

All,

I have an issue with the left hand rear tyre on my 2003 Celica T-Sport. When i took the car for an MOT, they pointed out that i had a cut in the inside of my tyre - no idea whether this was done before i bought the car or during it (can't imagine how it was done by me, i would have remembered hitting it!). Therefore i had to get the tyre off and replace it.

However, when i took the tyre off i noticed that the tyre had good tread on the outer edge of the tyre, and it was progressively getting worse towards the inside (where it was practically bald!). When i put the spare wheel on i noticed that the left hand rear wheel was angled differently to the right hand - possibly causing the tyre to run more on the inside edge - suggeesting maybe a suspension problem?

When i took that car to a Toyota Dealership to have it inspected their comments baffled me - but i wanted your opinions on what they said.

1. The tyre wear was common on this model of Celica - and that the insides of the tyres at the rear do wear out quicker than the outer edge, and that the only way to prolong the tyre life is to constantly rotate the wheels, switching with the front wheels etc.

2. The wear is also caused by "Active Rear Steering" - i didn't realise that the Celica had Active Rear Steering! Do they????

Does anyone know if this model of Celica has a weakness in the Rear Suspension, that could/can cause the wheel/tyre to run on the inside edge.

Is the garage telling porkies, and trying to fleece me?

Any suggestions about what i can do to rectify the problem before i have to replace another tyre due to it wearing down quickly?

i have a 2001 140vvti and ive put 12K miles on my tyres and they are not wearing on the inside or outside, they are wearing evenly. i dunno if the suspension set up is different on the 190 than the 140.

ive no idea about the active rear steering, never heard that before. my rear wheels dont move when i steer!!

1) Uneven tyre wear is common on the rubbish Pirelli that come stock. After a while they end up like 50p! The best thing to do is go and take it for a full geometry check... so thats the wheel allignment and camber. If the camber is out... the the wheel is tilting towards the road then you will have extreme unever wear.

2) There is no rear wheel steering!

My suggestion get some new GOOD tyres, like some Toyo Proxy T1-R and go get a geometry check. Specialist places in the midlands cost under £50 for a geometry check... even a Toyota dealer only charge £80. This will not only save you money on tyres, but save you money on fuel
