Max Size Of 17'' Tires For Avensis

Hi folks,

I have a 2007-made Avensis 2.0 vvti with factory-installed 215/50R17 tires that need to be replaced. Unfortunately this size of tires are ULTRA expensive. I can save up to 300 euros if I switch to 225/45R17. Do you think that this is a feasible alternative for a normal Avensis? Is there going to be any problem.

If I cannot modify the size of the tires, then my only alternative is Bridgestone ER300 215/50R17. What do you think about this tire. Are there any other alternatives?

Hi,

I am trying to find out whether I can downgrade to a 16" alloys with more tyre on it.

My T4 comes with 215/45/17" by default and yes these tyres are about 30% more expensive then 205/55/16" installed on T3(s/x).

You do need to consider whether the change will affect speedometer, will you have enough space to fit it (you want WIDER tyres), ride height and so on.

I tried to calculate using this calculator:

http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

However, I would still love somebody with proper experience to give us further advice and confirmation.

I hope there are certain safe tyre variation limits for each model; cannot believe that Mr T bothered changing speedo seetings, default wheel parts and so on between T2/T3/T4 to fit each overall tyre diammeter.

You're usually OK providing you keep the rolling radius within 2% of the original. You're right though, there's no substitute for practical experience. The manufacturers try lots of combinations of to get the best handling out of a car, so the more info you can get before you change them the better. With regard to the width, check the

But I don't think you'll damage your car's handling by reducing the width of the tyre slightly, or even reducing the wheel diameter. Most cars these days have huge wheels that are primarily chosen for styling rather than performance. You may well improve the handling.

Most Gen 5 Celicas that still have their stock wheels run different tyres (1 cm narrower) than original because you can't get the original size.

If you reduce wheel size you will have to check that the new ones don't foul the disks; your version of the car may have bigger disks than the models fitted with the smaller wheels; that's probably not the case here Goran, but check.

Good luck both of you. The Wheel and Tyre Bible is a great resource that you might find helpful.

Just adding note to t600 comment about fouling the disks, if i remember right the 1.8 vvt-i 277mm front disks and rears at 280mm. the 2.0vvt-i, 2.0d-4d 2.2 d-4d and 2.2 d-4d t180 have 295mm front disks and 280mm rear disks could be summat to think about. That could be the reason they fit the bigger wheels to the 2.0 upwards.

I tried 225/45 R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE050. It was great on my D-Cat WG.

Yeah, I also fitted Nokian 225/45v17 to my Avensis, albeit an older 1998 model, the original was 15" rims. They improved my handling and general feel.

Ciao, Bill.

hi again folks, 2.0 VVT-i T Spirit 4dr Seq Auto, comes with 215/45 r17 , so these tyres are expensive? i dont know anything about the car at all other than what ive learnt from here, so any help please, i.e price of the tyres? compared with the price of new wheels and new tyres? etc etc etc, i will be using this car part time as a taxi, so intend to do a few miles in it. thanks again in advance

or could you just change the tyre a size without changing the wheel? for example they fitted the wrong tyres on my focus a few weeks ago? the garage stopped me as i was leaving and rectifed the situation? but said it wouldnt of made any difference and the car would of been fine even with the wrong tyres?
