Avensis D4d Mpg

Hi all

I have a 2001 Avensis d4d estste and find the MPG a bit on the heavy side and a bit sluggish (compared to my old seat ibiza 110 sport 50mpg easy). I get about 45mpg on a long run 70 - 80mph max. general driving, 22 mile round trip to work - some traffic, b roads, motorway. I have tried driving gently and get abot 37mpg. Is this normal or should I get the car checked out (any ideas where to go - I live in Bristol area). I have been told it amy be down to the fuel air sensor or something similar. Perhaps a tuning box will help - can anyone recommend one - seen one on eBay for £100

Also, does this model have a replacable fuel filter as I cant see anything in the manual about replacing - just bleeding the filter.

Any feedback will be most appreciated.

Thanks

To Grimola,

If i sit at steady pace on motorway around 65mph, trip meter shows around 50 to 52 mpg. Around town never drops below 42 to 44 mpg. I will assume your fuel filter is placed towards rear righthand side of engine bay it should have large black primming knob on top.

If you locate it, once you have screwed sensor into bottom of new filter, fill filter with fuel allmost to top start engine & do not touch trottle pedal 90% of the time system will self prime itself. Make sure you check air filter for dirt & blockages, if so chuck & replace. If your getting 45mpg between 70 & 80 mph I think your doing well. 37mpg possibly on low side should be slightly higher I think, wait for other forum users views. I would cough up for an Hrs labour just incase you have some sensor problems & then take it from their. Remember your trip meter is only working out average uploading every couple of minutes.

I have done a night journey down to pembroke docks many many times, roads very quite & have seen 56mpg on the clock at a nice steady pace. Just out of interest how many people remember to reset trip meter after having new front tyres fitted, see what difference that makes to your readings???????

That doesn't seem to bad to me to be honest for a Mk1 estate.

The seat ibiza is a tiny car in comparison, with similar power so it will be quicker and more economical ( as there's less for it to pull along.)

I've noticed a clean air filter and some injector cleaner usually makes a difference though.

I drive only in town. From home to work ~8 km, so in the city my fuel consumption is 9l/100 km.(26 mpg) I think it is too much for diesel. But thinking that start-stop in the traffic jam could make low fuel consumption is silly.

I dont know what realy consumption shoul be for my D4D 2002 estate.

By the way, i bought car before 2 months and I didint change anything. I'm going to change the fuel filter, oils, and maybe air filter, but from the first look it was acceptable.

P.S. 9 L/100km is showing car's computer. I filled up my fuel tank, now done 250 km and it shows, that left ~35-38L

Thanks for feedback chaps! I will check out the filters and try the injector cleaner. I actually drove the car this morning at a steady 60mph (after resetting the trip computer) for 40 miles and computer was showing 53mpg. It doesnt seem to like the stop/start situations as well as it should.

Also, I have noticed that the idle is sometimes at 1250 rpm and then 750ish rpm (when warm), it only does this a few times over my 22 mile round trip to work (I notice when I am at traffic lights or stopped of course!). Any comments? Maybe this is a sensor problem as Beagh 1958 suggested. I will also take it to a diesel specialist to make sure in the new year as it will be due for a service in the next few months. I will report my finding then.

By the way I use Sainsburys diesel on a regular basis - any comments on this fuel? I have been told by a colleague that Shell is best but I thought all diesel fuel is more or less the same!

Thanks all!

I think mine goes up to about 1250 when the heater fan's switched on, when switched off it drops down below 1000.

OK Rossi46 - will check that out - sounds a bit strange!

To All Above,

In regards to high idle speed from cold. All D4D engines to this from cold, it is controlled via electronic idle valve. If device was not fitted, when you place load on engine from cold & in stationary position, your idle speed would drop possibly resulting in car stalling. This is not a fault if your idle speed did not rise when engine cold . Then you would have a Fault.

Some info on fuel returns.

I drive a d4d but not an estate but get 50 with ease. at 70 mph usually the computer is up in the 80s and spends most of its time on --- drops to 50s on hills.

Air filter should not look dark grey. Fuel filters are 40k items. tyres should be wearing evenly inflate to acheive even wear, michelins give better fuel ecconomy, Ive not got michelins at present. no roof racks and a clean ish car.

Premium fuels such as shells optima and total excelium are cleaner fuels and as a result will clean your fuel system. this makes it easier for the engine fuel pump to suck in the fuel. but using them is costly BP says 28miles more per 50 litres. but costs dont seem to be worth it.

Redex diesel injector claener 8 applicatons for £11 is a product I use it works, allowing you to use cheaper fuels supermarket fuels bio,s etc.

If you get poor preformance with poor economy check out the tea bag type strainer in the fuel tank. Or run several lots of redex injector cleaner through the tank. start with 10 litres of supermarket derv and one full dose of cleaner then use one per full tank reset your oddometer and monitor untill your ecconomy is back.

On the third tank you should be able to get 580 to 630 miles computers average 60s 70's and some 80's, add range remaining to odometer miles traveled as a guide, try getting up to speed then staying within speed limits to keep your results consistent while testing.

Remember those Avensis drivers doing 60 in the left lane are getting high mpg's the computer average is somewhere in the 80's

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the info D4Ddriver

I get abot 520 - 530miles and it takes about £59 to fill my tank at Sainsburys that s with mixed driving! I am due a service so will have all filters changed and try the additive. I am starting to wonder if its just my journey pattern as I do take some backroads to avoid traffic jams and there are quite a few gradients and junctions and small traffic ques so there is alot of accelerating.stopping. I took 60 mile round trip and didn't go above 60 mph when traffic was very light and got 52mpg. My air filter is a bit on the dirty side but I have seen worse!

Interesting, pls see my experience.

I will also try the Redex but expect that short trips is no good for a diesel, nor is the hilly landscape we have here in the Borders, I have to shift down

into 5th often as one can not carry the speed to hold it in 6th all the time.

My wife also admits to 'forget' that the car has 6 gears and once, just after we just got the car, she drove it to Edinburgh in 3rd or 4th (with the stereo at full blast..) - daft woman B) ..I can see why she did it as the engine is very smooth high up in the rev range.

Hi Pjotr

I have recently achived abot 51mpg over 200 miles - B an A road driving with light traffic max 60 mph. I think that these cold mornings and heavy (ish) traffic (pre xmas holidays) dramatically reduces mpg. I will see how it goes when the weather warms up.!
