I very much doubt there is a valve stem seal missing, also they wouldnt be able to tell unless they removed the cams/valve springs.

The new 2.0 & 2.2 (1AD/2AD) diesel engines are becoming common for heavy oil usage due to the oil control rings on the pistons clogging up with carbon and oil and scoring the bores.

The fix for this is to remove the engine to remove the cylinder head. When this is done the bores are checked for score marks. If there are marks present then the whole short motor is replaced under warranty. If there isnt scoring to the bores then 4 new modified pistons and modified piston rings are fitted and the engine rebuilt with a new headgasket (5 different available depending on piston protusion amount)

I have done quite a few of these engines over the last couple of months at work.

Did they suggest an oil consumption test when you took it in? Does it smoke at any time? How low did the oil level get when the loud ticking noise started (if you checked of course)

All the above should be covered by the warranty.

Mart.

Hello Mart

I hope this is not another oil burning issue with Toyota's it tends to shake your confidence a bit after the Avensis oil burning problems but hopefully these will be an isolated cases

Do you know when they started to fit the modified pistons and rings? A month ago (late October 2007) I purchased a new 2.2 D4D, and wondered if this was something I should look forward to:-(

Im not too sure when the modified pistons/rings were first fitted (if at all) or when the engines were built sorry. Im not at work for a few weeks so i cant give you an answer to that sorry.

Your car may well be fine for years and years but its always good practice to check you oil often. Alot of people never even look under the bonnet - let alone know how to open it.....this is where alot of probs start as they drive, drive and drive and usually by the time we see it, the damage has been done.

Good to hear  , i still find it hard to believe the engine was missing its stem seals like they told you though. Esp if they never split the engine to check.

My 2.2 TD verso seems to use about 1 litre per 1000 miles (about from the top dot on the dip stick to the bottom dot). also seems a lot noisier than it use to be. Now has 17000 on the clock. Is it a classic case of the problem with the rings you have discribed and should I mention it at the 20000 service.

Thanks

As PK says you should definately mention it at the service or if you have time to take it down before give them a call and ask them about it. They should mention doing a consumption check on the oil (needs to be done before they will authorise a new block or rings if the consumption is bad enough). We usually top the oil up to the MAX mark on the dipstick, let the owner have the car back and do 1000 miles then return for us to check the level again.

If it does need doing you will be without the car for a few days when they fix it.
