Can someone clear this up.

I have a 55 plate petrol XTR and I am thinking of trading it in for a new diesel xtr.

What car quote a target price of £19606 for a diesel xtr.

If I am trading my 55 plate in, would he start at that price and subtract my cars value

or would he go to the on the road price of £21868 and then minus my cars value...... so

the target price is really the cash price.

Help please

Graham

You mis-guided poor person. Diesels are only for train drivers and generators. Both use red diesel.

I can understand at this stressful time of year that your husband/wife/partner/great-grand-parent may be arguing the benefits of paying extra for a diesel - believe me - it is only because the past generations have been used to using diesel for sewage pumps, and hence from there some sort of credibility came. well, one can understand, can one not, if ones' home drainage system fails with quite frustrating consequences and along comes Mr drain with a diesel sewage pump.

You will have to consider why you wish to change - the dieselly version uses dual mass flywheels which in the past have proven problems. These of course have been solved. Well for the time being. Coming from Glasgow, I know you will not be completely off the rails as some 5 door diesel drivers are on this forum - so I would first of all ask your dealer for at least a day to test drive each car - push each to the limit - rev the beast til it revs no more. Take it upon the M73 and see if you can out-accelerate a fish lorry from Lerwick. Cram each of the cars with what you would normally do - 60 cases of tennents or 30 fish suppers. o cruising on the glasgow circuit and count how many people wave at you....check your street credibility.

These sort of decisions cannot be made lightly. My 1994 petrol RAV, 3 DOOR bought from new, cost me £21,550 in 1994 and I still have it - although I have now upgraded it appropriately by removing the rear seats so that I don't get hassled with carrying friends/passengers/kids/prams.

I urge you to think about the first year depreciation - its terrible. For £2000+, what could you buy instead - 2 early RAVs for fun...... a 3SGTE Toyota racing engine like wot I've done????

Your only young once - live life to the full - get rid of the kids and get motoring!!!!!!!!!!!

Leave the diesel to the trains and the generators.

best regards and good luck - think it through carefully after a few glasses

Oh, and by the way, do you ken onywan whit cuid sell me red diesel fur ma 6kw generator????

an ah dinnae stay in Bothwell.....in the wurds o the Proclaimers - "Ah will walk 500 feet....."

The What Car Target price is an estimate of how low you can get the price. It's your target, the dealer's target is list price, so yes, he'll probably start at list price.

With regard to discounts, different dealers work in different ways. Many will stick at list price, but give you a bit more than your car is worth as a trade in to make you feel a bit better about how much yours has depreciated.

All that really matters to you is the price to change i.e. the car price, less the trade in price.

Make sure the dealers know you're going to shop around. From each one you need to know what their price is and what they'll offer you for your car. No point getting an extra £1000 for your car if you're paying an extra £2000 for the car you're buying.

The best deal you'll get will be target price, then sell your car privately, but it's a lot more hassle.

I always use the cost to change as a guide what to pay.

In the past I have used Carfile and the price they quoted me was lower than the What car target price !! all dealing were done through a Toyota dealer no cash was paid to the car broker but was paid to the Toyota dealer any offers that was available to Toyota customers were also available to me !! the dealer also even took my part exchange in and gave me what I had been offered at other Toyota dealers .

Because Carfile have arrangements with dealers through there fleet departments they can get a better discount.

The dealer pays Carfile a fee for the introduction

hope it is some help

As a guide Carfile are quoting

Toyota RAV4

2.2 D-4D XT-R 5dr £19,113.00

For a start take no notice of bothy. His thought process is severely effected through drinking avgas and nitrous He calls it whiskey, bless him). It is how they derived the term "petrol head".

To negotiate a new car you need to be ruthless and remember you are not their best friend as they would have you believe, you are a punter and you have commission written accross your forehead.

The very best thing you can do is to sell your car privately because you will get far more for it and it also puts you in a strong position to negotiate a discount on your new car. Get the very best price you can (for the new car) and you can usually do better towards the end of the month. Then phone around and see who'll better it. When you get to the best price see what you can get added to sweaten it - carpets, mudflaps, reversing sensors, fuel etc.

As a private seller you only have a moral obligation to the buyer and he has very little comeback on you (unless it is dangerous or stolen or something extraordinary).

Don't be in too much of a hurry as you'll end up kicking yourself.

Good luck

Car dealers want it all their own way, so as a P/X you would have to pay retail price for the new diesel and take trade value for your petrol, myself i could not live with that sort of loss but its all down to how much you want or need the diesel.

Two other price guides to check out are......

Parkers...... http://www.parkers.co.uk/

Wisebuyer.... http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/

Good luck  .

Damn. Thats the train back late again.

Must be the cold weather waxes up the diesel engines.

Was tempted to buy a 3 DOOR petrol '94 RAV on eBay - black and nice condition - sold for less than £900!!! On that basis, I could buy 21 similar machines and still have money left!!! rather than buy a new one that burns oil which was really designed for lorries and trains.

Ah well - ye makes yer bed etc. I paid over £21,000 for my RAV in 1994 which at that time was top of the range. Depreciation cost has been spread over 13+ years and still going so not so bad.

All I've seen in the breakers yards are diesel 5 door RAVs - wonder why that might be??? Badly driven? not looked after? Or just rubbish??
