Stiff First Two Gears On Yaris Tr 1.3

Hi,

I've been reading around the threads on probs with Toy yaris 1.3 vvti manual 2007.

I've been having quite a lot of probs with changing the first two gears on quite cold mornings. It tends to be really difficult for the the first two gears to engage properly for the first five minutes when the engine is still cold. As soon as the engine seems to warm up, the gears prob dissappear.

Since it's my first car, I#m not really sure whether gears prob on cold mornings is meant to be something which is normal, specially on the 2007 yaris model

Hi

I have the same problem.

New Yaris, 1st & 2nd very bad until car warms up.

I guess its lack of lubricant when the gearbox is cold.

I am going to add to a very long list problems before I visit the garage tomorrow.

Being a brand new car surely things are still bedding in? This could be the problem on the new Yaris but not too sure about the older models.

My Sr always suffered from slightly stiff gearing from 1st to 2nd but never bothered me enough to warrant it being looked at. I found that it would get halfway into gear then I had to give it a bit more oomph to engage it fully.

No such probs on my T-pot though, gearbox is lovely!!!! :P

I've noticed that the mats that come with the Yaris are quite thick, which can mean that when you depress the clutch you dont get the pedal down the full way and the car doesnt like this very much. When changing gear, I've picked up that if you press the pedal quite hard so it really depresses well then this can make the gear changes smoother and a lot easier to physically get into the gear aswell.

However, with the car being a 2007 model do allow a little bit of leeway as such for everything to bed in and get smoother..but if you are concerned then deffo speak to your Dealer.

The Yaris gearbox isn't what you would call silky smooth to begin with. Throw in a cold start and old gear oil and it's just plain awful.

Hi

900 miles on the clock.

Problems so far.

Something loose in the back of the drivers seat. Car going in on Wednesday for the seat to be stripped down.

Knocking noise from clutch every time you depress. Dealer fixed it but fix only lasted for 50 miles.

First & second gear crunch when engine cold.

Front brakes grind when you stop in first or second. It's not the over night rust you get on the disks. Does it all the time.

Smart entry. Hit unlock button on boot and sometimes the boot only half unlocks.

Smart entry. Hit unlock button on boot and sometimes the boot tries to lock not unlock.

Front Wipers do not return to parking spot when you use the flick wipe.

Was speaking to a very unhappy owner in the garage, new car. Front electric window jammed in down position needs a new motor plus needs new disks & pads due to a fault. (All under warranty)

This is my first Toyota after owing loads of Peugeot.

Where's the legendary Toyota build quality and reliability?

Please post replies telling me this is only new car issues.

Anybody else got a 2007 model with issues?

Going back to the subject of gear changes.

Just took the car to a quite back road for some testing.

I must agree with the comments about mats & making sure the pedal is all the way down.

The clutch bites with the pedal only just of the floor. I have never driven a car with such a low bite point before.

If I concentrate and put my foot hard down and just lift an inch whilst hitting the gas I get a very smooth gear change.

Does the clutch bite this low on all Yaris? Or does it loosen up and bite higher with age?

The thicker the floor mat the worse the problem, even changing from shoes to trainers makes it worse.

Just to prove the point I jumped into a 107 (Normal bite point), Blimey just kept revving the engine without going anywhere.
