How long does a typical pre-facelift UK 6th gen gearbox last for - assuming mines the original, it's now been running for 12-13 years, which is great - am just wondering how is anyone else's gearbox running - mine makes a slight higher pitched whine sound generally, but it still seems rock solid, "great" useable etc, and I've no problems with it - is there any kind of preventative servicing that could been done on it to prolong it?

A change in gerbox oil (along with an additive) would do no harm, this often reduces/eliminates the whine you speak of. The whine is typically wear on the differential bearings, a whining box is still good for 10s of thousands of miles. Driving with restraint in 1st gear is also advised as this is hard on the box.

There is a gearbox treatment that comes highly recommended for Toyots'a, can't for the life of me remember the name of it at the moment though.

Molyslip is what that stuff is called. Despite the benifitsof using molyslip/Slick 50 etc many folk say they should never be used due to the fact that SynChromesh relies on friction to work. Personally as it is an old (no offense meant) car with a whining box I wouldn't hesitate about trying one.
