I take it this is with a wet screen? Most wipers will make a noise if the screen is dry.

Is the noise happening in both directions, or just one? And do they appear to judder and not wipe very well as they make the noise?

Road film thrown up off the roads is the usual cause of noisy/juddering wipers. The Toyota blades are made of a soft rubber and rarely cause unusual noises unless they are old and the rubber has gone hard. Try cleaning the screen by hand with methalated spirit, it gets rid of the diesel and other rubbish which sticks to the screen in the winter. A pair of genuine Toyota blades from our website is £15.99 delivered, if you cant see your model listed, do an "Add to basket" on the model nearest yours and at the checkout there is a special instructions box, put your vehicle details in there to get the right blades

the noise happens in both directions

its more pronounced on a dry screen, but happens if the screen is moist

its disappears when the screen is very very wet in heavy rain

it seems to wipe the screen well though

i will give the screen a good wipe with the spirit

will the paint be affected if i spill spirit on the paint work?

i might invest in a new pair of wipers

i bought the current ones from toyota and the noise started after a few weeks

Hi,

gave the screen a good wipe with spirit

but the problem of screeching is still there

and its more obvious on the upstroke and quiet on the downstroke

any ideas what it might be?

Try another blade on it, if the noise goes away it was a faulty blade which can be claimed for under warranty, assuming you bought genuine blades

That suggests the blade is at a different angle on the upstroke. This can be due to a bent component, or perhaps permanent set in the rubber.

The arm and blade harness should present the rubber at 90 degrees the screen. Of course because the screen is curved this can't be the case right the way through the wiper's travel, so the compromise is to have it at 90 degrees when the blades are about half way across the screen. To check this stop your wipers using the ignition key when they're at their mid point (i.e. 45 degrees from their park position). Look at the angle the wiper makes to the screen; the metal harness should be 90 degrees to the screen. The rubber should be laid over at about 45 degrees trailing the direction of travel.

If the harness isn't at 90 degrees then you have to consider twisting the arm so that it's at the right angle. This is a pain and is a last resort because you have to do it carefully to avoid damaging anything in the process.

If the harness angle is right, but the rubber isn't laying at 45 degrees to the screen then maybe it has permanent set; lift the blade from the screen and examine. As soon as it's lifted the blade should be in line with the harness and if it isn't then that could be the problem. When parked the rubbers tend to lay one way and eventually they retain that shape instead of returning to their mid position.

Hope that makes some sense.

hello

I also face to the same problem but only with right wiper. I have recently replaced an old ones to Campion branded (1 year ago).

But now the only right one got noisy. I suggest the problem is with flexibility lack of the rubber blade. I have also disclosed that when the car is remained under the rain several hours prior to drive -- both wipers run smoothly having no noise.

Hi Igor,

I guess you cannot take advantage from Parts-King's offer on their Toyota dealer site. I have recently bought (not being aware of this option) some Bosh wipers 24"/16" and the results are excellent. No noise anymore and the quality of the film after is splendid. The sensor driven wipers work perfectly now as well, as someone had righlty pointed it out.

My guess is that you would need wipers change (not that you needed any advice on that :)) Have you tried to wash with some glycerine the noisy one? This could cure the problem for a while but is definitely not a permanent cure.

Cheers,

John

hi John

Please make clear in details -- it looks very interesting to safe money for new wipers purchasing.

I have no experience with glycerine.

What it is used for?

thanks beforehand/igor

Hi Igor,

The glycerine is used as softening/hydrating skin agent in cosmetics. It also interacts with some organic materials, rubber is one of these although not very stringly. If you take some glycerine and put on the rubber (use some tissue and apply a thin layer) and leave it for a while, the chances are that some of it might penetrate the upper layers of the rubber and make it softer. This effect however does not hold for long (depending on the environment, cold or warm weather).

I have tried this on my old Ford Mondeo, it did not make sense to buy new wipers given the fact that I was about to give it for part exchange.

I hope this would solve temporarily your problems. If you could find anything else that could change the rubber properties, reducing the stifnes of the material, it could work as well, the vapours of some organic solvents would give you this effect, but the rubber might start to break down depending on the time of contact.

Good luck and please post your observations.

Cheers,

John

I get very little trouble with wipers once the screen is cleaned and the blades replaced, it is usually the wiper rubber which goes hard over time which causes them to go noisy

We have a range of popular ones for sale on our website here

These are the most popular blades, but if you have something not listed, PM me

The blades are genuine Toyota "Optifit" blades
