Smelly Air Conditioning

Hi,

I've had my Verson 2.2 diesel for over a year and I am very happy with it, much better quality build than my previous Ford C-Max. However, since the first and ony service of around two months ago, the car now stinks inside and outside when I turn the air conditioning on, or off. I usually leave the airco on permanently because it gets rid of all the mist on the windows in the winter but my wife, who is the main user of the car, is forever fiddling around with it. She took the car back to the dealer today and the dealer says there are loads of people who are having the same problem, including an employee who has a Toyota which has done 200.000 kms. He's been having the problem for the last month or so. I did a search here but the result came up blank - has anyone experienced a similar problem ? Is there a fix ?

Cheers

Peter

It is a general problem with air con, especially if you use it a lot, not just on Toyota but on all makes. You get a build up of bacteria in the vents which starts to smell after a while. The cure is to make sure you use a sanitiser every once in a while, they are available in two formats, A: A spray can with a long wand, which you spray into the vents, not the best in my opinion, or B: A spray that you set off inside the car, a bit like a smoke bomb, you run up the air con, leave it swithched on and set off your air con bomb, the sanitiser gets all around the vents and kills off the smelly bacteria. It is something that should be done at least once a year to stop the build up of bacteria. You may have been offered and air con service by your dealer, this includes topping up the gas and re-oiling the air con system, and also the sanitiser, most people dont want it because they use their A/C very little, but if you use it a lot, it is worth it. We can supply the A/C bombs for £19.99 delivered. PM me for details

OR, if you have a little hand held steam cleaner ( see QVC or other such tat places ) you can disinfect the system by running the aircon on full while 'injecting' steam into the intake in the passenger footwell. 10 minutes or so usually does the trick. I've heard of people doing this with kettles too, although the portable steamers are better at providing a sustained steam presence.

Which ever way you try to sort it though, it's not a major job. Good luck !

I called the dealer yesterday and now he says he sells an aerosol that you inject into the filter. Why he didn't tell the wife yesterday when she brought the car back I don't know. The problem is it costs €47, ie about 35 quid !
