Well I have the Green induction kit and the custom freeflow exhaust, and to be fair combined they do make a helluva difference, BUT, I've decided I want more power and I want to stick with the 5efe engine and I want reliability. (Don't ask much me :D )

What does everyone reckon is the way to go. ECU chip? etc, etc ;)

Oli's probably got the most expieriance with the Unichip.

you can always stick NOS on!!!!

you could try an ECU remap m8 like you say should squeeze out about 20bhp if you're lucky, or a turbo (not sure if your engine has a turbo?) if it does... get a bigger turbo!! :D

or like james says, NOS ;):D

I'd be interested in the chip as well if you can find anything out about it.

Look at your costs first mate as long as you keep a 4ETFE serviced regular then they will run sweet as a nut. I'd look at long term goals of what you want to achieve as you can quite easily tune the turbo motor. I did this my self when looking at the sr starlet i had before the turbo it was cheaper to change the whole car than start throwing money at a N/A engine.

I would strongly consider the turbo route. Not only does it give the biggest increase, it probably gives more bang for your buck than anything else - and that can be further modified.

I was surprised by the difference in performance between an ordinary Sera and the turbo version.

I'm a big proponent of improving the ignition system. I bought the NGK spark wires for about $45, and they really didn't make a difference, but I'm saving for an Multiple Spark Discharge (MSD) ignition. it improves fuel efficiency and low end power. I have an intake too, and it improved high end power, so now I'm looking to pick up the throttle response. also, platinum or Iridium plugs will always help.

Mods to the n/a engine are quite expensive for actually very little response.

The turbo upgrade is, on a Sera, an extra 25bhp without any other mods.

For a Paseo which has the detuned version of the Sera engine, the upgrade will give about 40bhp increase.

There is no modification short of completely ripping the engine to bits and race prepping it that would give an extra 40bhp for the same cost of the Starlet turbo conversion.

And when you get bored with it, the Starlet responds well to upgrades.

Also the standard 4E-FTE engine is a very reliable unit.

The main problem with this for me, apart from the cost of doing it, is the insurance, I just don't think I'd be able to afford it!

I'd love to but I don't know... :(

Whats the score with the chips does anyone know?

& not this kind...

Just a thoughgt mate but as Andrew has said before if you left the starlet 4ETFE engine standard and get an insurance quote then list all your mods and tell the insurance company i'd like to see then difference in the price????

So all I've gotta do is convince the wife I need a new engine ;)

This may take some time

I think I saw somewhere that one of the 20v engines engines would fit and that has about 165bhp? as standard

Best go buy her some flowers right now

Thats right Dazh but quite honestly I think it'd tear the car apart, the chassis' not designed for that much power is it!! The 4E would be perfect I think.

Si your right, I'll do it & report back!
