2001 1.4 Corolla Heating Problem - Please Advice

I have 2 problems with my car and I am after some advice please.

1) I bought this car from used toyota dealership with a 12 month toyota warranty. The AC never worked from the beginning. I had the gas recharged and it worked for 2 months and gradually the coolness went down. My local Toyota dealer replaced the aircon compressor and it cools well now(but then the outside temp is only in single figures now).

After the aircon compressor was changed, i am having a new problem with the heating fan.

When i start the car from cold and turn on the heating with fan on full blast, it works fine and heats and blows hot/warm air in full blast, after 20 mins of driving, the fan sound changes to the sound of a food processor (sound turns very high) and the hot air blast changes to a soft trickle of hot air.

The heating itself is working, if you place the hand on any of the vents, you can feel the heat, but the fan noise changes loud and the air flow is very much reduced. Local toyota dealer is not very helpful. He had my car for a day and said this is normal.

Once the car is turned off and cooled a little, the heating works fine(full air blast and normal fan sound) for another 15 to 20 mins and then the same problem happens again.

2) Driver side front headlight glass has a crack(not completely broken) and i have put duck tape for now. Can the glass be replaced on its own or does the complete unit needs to be replaced? Is there any transparent heat/water resistant tape that can be used? Will it pass the MOT?

How much will a replacement unit cost?

Any Advice will be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks and Regards - J.

what age is your corolla, i am not sure what is going on with the fan but if its making a noise like a food processor you probably want to getthat sorted asap before it starts to get expensive, though to replace the compressor they shouldnt have had to touch anything to do with the fan, unless they managed to drop something down the vent but that shouldnt be time or heat related as it would seam to be

as for the lense, a crack wont fail the mot as long as the pattern isnt affected, which cracksgenerally dont do, you can test this with a piece of paper or a flat wall a couple of feet from the light, i am pretty sure the lenses dont come seperately, all the time i was at toyota i only ever changed complete units, not sure on the price but if you get a price from toyota, then look on eBay, and round the scrap yards you should be able to find one for a reasonable price,

hope that helps

Thanks very much for your reply. It is a March 2001 1.4 Corolla.

It looks like either the fan or electronics regulating the fan speed starts to fail when it is hot. The sound starts off normally and slowly starts to Whine and then in a couple of mins turns loud and the air flow is hindered.

Thanks and Regards,

J.

You could try getting hold of helicopter tape. It's clear, like vinyl or polyurethane, and the main problem with it is the expense - about £50 for a 1" roll! I guess you need to work in the right industry and know a friendly or sympathetic storeman (they usually are once they become aware it's for home use), I found one once and treat the roll like gold dust!

Cheers.

Thanks Panners. I tried the local B&Q and Homebase, but no one was aware of this tape. Finally, bought a super glue (for mirror) and applied it. Seems to be okay for now, Not sure what will happen when i drive over a bump etc.
