hi all and happy new year :)

my other halfs handbrake lever comes up nearly all the way and i was wondering 'if' it doesnt require new pads how it can be altered ? is it an easy job ? (the garage she got it from reckon they fitted new pads before she bought it but i would of thought they would of sorted the lever if this was true ? )

thankyou :)

It is my intention to do a handbrake adjustment Tech Bulletin for 4.2 and 4.3s but I'm afraid I've never had the pleasure of a 4.1.

Some 4.1s have shoes and others have discs which on the later models have a small drum brake inside the disc (refered to by brake development people as "drum in hat"). This would nat be effected by fitting new pads. I don't know which yours has but I know a man who will have done both......................

Bothyyyyyyyyyy!

:help2:

On the 4.1, handbrake turns have never been of any great success due to the 4x4 wheel drive. As my front brakes dragged badly, I didn't need the handbrake much either!!

Anyway, according to my book the handbrake should go up a max of 8 clicks. The handbrake cable adjuster can be accessed from / by removing the centre console. Thereupon will be seen an adjuster and locknut like wot you see on many brake cables (caravans etc) Tighten the cable adjuster and then tighten up the locknut - replace console.

Simple as that - but thats for drum brakes.

If you have pads at the back it must be a 4.2 or 4.3 or something of that ilk. One of the benefits of having the 4.1 I suppose.

Now then

The car has rear discs with handbrake shoes running on the inside of the disc hub (drum in hat) These shoes very often get overlooked and people assume the handbrake is operated by the discs/pads which is not the case, there are handbrake cables AND shoes that need adjusting, I suggest looking at the shoes and linkages first, they are prone to wear/seizing in harsh conditions

Hope this helps, any further info required, PM me

When its something fairly straightforward like this, any garage with a ramp/lift should do it in under an hour. A dealers rates are £80+ an hour??

I'd be surprised if the rear shoes were worn...probably just need an adjustment.

Or pick up a medium sized rock and some rope.

The rock to chock the wheel, and the rope to tie to a lampost...... hmmmm - you live in the Midlands?? Somebody would nick the rock! Up here they would steal the lampost for the scrap metal. :o

We are 90 miles from Brum Gramps, any competant garage should be able to whip a wheel and disc off to check for you, let me know how you get on

Bothy:

The scallys around here would nick the lamp post fer scrap and put the rock through yer window fer a laff ;)
