Automatic Gear Change Roughness

I have a 2001 Avensis 1.8 VVT-I Auto, and wanted to ask some questions regarding the automatic. Today, I test drove a slightly newer Corolla 1.6 VVT-I Auto, with a 2003 plate. Apart from the similarities, I noticed the Corolla was a much more smoother change. When driving the Avensis, or when I'm a passenger inside, I can always tell when the gear changes, mainly because of the slight jolt received as it does change gear. Sometimes the jolts are very much noticeble, but other times there are fainter, but there nonetheless.

I think I'm right in assuming that the Corolla and Avensis share the same type of gearbox, one with 4 speeds. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to make the changes in the Avensis smoother. I have read around and used the search function, and I'm thinking this has a fair bit to do with the gearbox oil, although I'm not sure. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Best bet is to seek a transmission specialist and have it drained and then refilled. Or get toyota to do it.. cost will vary.

When you have done this reset the ECU by unplugging the Battery for 10 mins.

See how you get on with that. Also they may be able to answer some questions that you have.

Thanks for your reply, Steve. Its not really a big problem or anything, its just I would like the changes to be a little smoother. Is there anything that I can do myself, like check the oil to make sure there is nothing wrong with it, or a problem with the quantity of it.

Can anyone advise me where to get an oil change done? I don't really want to go to the Toyota dealership, as I'm fairly sure they'll charge alot.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I recently checked the gearbox's fluid, and the colour of it was red and that there was enough of it.
