Does the engine stutter? It could be fuel injectors if that is happening. I know alot of pugs suffer from a problem like that, when the light comes on the engine stutters and you can push pedal to the metal but you dont move! Other than that I'm not sure sorry.

Had a similar problem with 2.0TD ('98) - engine management light came on and car lost power completely, to the point where it was taking about 5 minutes to reach 60mph. Also this was joined by a severe knocking noise from the engine. I initially took this to my own mechanic who said it sounded the worst case of dodgy fuel he had ever heard. He drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter and filled with good fuel. This got rid of the knocking but still no power. Took the car to Toyota who said that every sensor assosiated with fuel injection was showing a fault and they suggested replacing the engine wiring loom at a cost of over £700 before they could diagnose it properly????

Anyway I drove it on BP Ultimate diesel for about 2 weeks and used several bottles of injector cleaner and fuel lubricant (millers diesel power plus) and whatta you know after the two weeks it took off like a rocket!!! So after all that it looked like it was dirty fuel had blocked injectors or something similar.

Hi

I've got an 02 D4D. I had the same problem. Have you been using bio diesel? I had and the fuel filter was blocked with all kinds of, well snot to be perfectly honest. I changed the filter and car was ok. Before I changed the filter I took it to the main dealer and they didn't have a clue. I had the engine management light on but they said they couldn't get a code from the ecu and it would cost £200 to find out. Luckily I have a family friend who's in the spares trade and he, once I'd told him about the bio diesel, suggested changing the filter. Magic and cost less than a tenner. I have been told that the air flow switch can cause the same sort of fault.

Hope this helps

Having just spent in excess of £200 for having my fuel tank flushed.(petrol into diesol). My local T garage carried out a full clean of pipes and injectors and replaced the fuel filter. This was done on the 8th Jan. I get a call from her in doors to say that she had stalled the car at traffic lights and immiediatly started the car to see the engine management light come on. Now could this be associated with the fuel problem or simpley the fact that the car had a hic-cup being started so quickly after stalling. Would that be possible. Its just that Ive been to this garage now nearly 5 times this year alone. And we are only into the second week of January. The 1st instance engine light came on and it was glow plug problem, then steering problems etc.

I just hope that if I clear the light by methods suggested on this site. (ie disconnecting ecu or poss terminal of battery) that maybe that is all it needs. However if by diconnectign poss terminal what other memory losses could the car develop.

Sorry by the way I have an Avensis 03 T3s D-4d.

Hi

I used to work in main dealers and for a car broker. We had a lot of trouble with the same problems as you are describing with Saabs a year or so ago which took hours of Saab UK trouble shooting. It turned out to be the diesel particulate filters, so is always worth checking of your car has one and whether this is causing the prob.

Oh yipee :0)

Was starting to worry having read other threads :0(

Yesterday whilst driving at 40 miles per hour in our Avensis verso d4d 2 litre diesel just at the point the turbo kicks in the anber engine light came on and the car lost power it slowed right down to barely moving. Although the engine was still on and everything working the car was not even moving when my hubbys foot was full on the accelerator. We pulled over switched the engine off then ater 10 mins switched it back on and the light went off we managed to get home ( 20 miles away ) but didn't take the car over 50. Obviously now he is worried about using it incase it happens again and has had to use my yaris...

Please anyone can you help what do you think it is and what should we try?

****update****

it seems i got it wrong he was doing 40 as the turbo kicked in and lost power.. he said he has noticed when drivig at 40 and about to overtake if he asks it for full power at over taking it stuttering abit then is ok..

its been fine since touch woood no warning light and driving fine he has however but fuel cleaner in and decent fuel..

thanks for your help

I have a D4D on an 03 plate and the same happened to me.

In the handbook it say's that if your driving along and the managment system detects a fault,it goes in to "limp home mode".

This function will restrict the engine to no more than 1500rpm.

Its a built in saveguard to stop the engine becoming damaged.

I pulled over, turned the key off and restarted and everything was as it should be except that the managment light is still on(posted about this). This was 6 months ago,the lights still on and there ain't nothing wrong with it.
