righto peeps, didnt think i would be posting one of these so soon into the ownership but never mind, just as well you luvly peeps are around to help (hopefully).

Was driving up a hill to drop me kids off at school this morning, was powering up in 3rd when some idiot coming down the hill decided she had the right of way and pull out and around a parked car, forcing me to bring me lil ole rav to a quick stop, which it did no problems. But after dropping it into 1st and pulling away it didnt wanna go any faster than about 10 mile an hour, even with the pedal to the floor, and the little engine light was on.

I managed to crawl the rest of the way to the school. then stopped for a minute or so, when i started the engine back up the rav was moving along fine, tho i wasnt pushing it or even half pushing it and it got me home (not that far but all the same). The lil engine light is still on and when i took the rav out again briefly just now again it was pootling along nicely but the engine light still isnt going off. Also there was a slight plasticy burning smell but that wasnt there on the way home so i guess it coulda been coming into the car from somewhere else.

ok so the manual says to take it to Toyota but i wanted to run it by you experienced owners first :)

ta Jan x

Never had that wi ma 4.1 3 door so it must be something to do with the fancy systems that the new RAVs have. Maybe there's some sort of engine protection in cases where you're going up hill and have to slamn on the brakes for some numpty coming the other way, when in fact kids should really walk to school despite the dangers. It wouldn't be the we'ens lunch box stuck under the dashboard????(causing smelly plastic)???

I'd guess the engine wouldn't like an oil starvation happening with the dual response of incline + sharp braking. My old Jaguar did the same. However that had been designed in the late 60's.

No doubt a 5 door expert will add favourable helpful comment....

As a fault has triggered the ECU to report a fault. You not going to get that little Engine Check light off. You need to get the fault code to diagnose what caused the light to come on in the first place.

Either you need to find a freind with an OBD II reader 9(f that's right ) or take it to Mr T to diagnose fault code for you...

Is the RAV driving fine now just apart from the light blinking at you.....

The engine has a limp home mode and I think it activated when you hit the brake. You can buy a OBD11 reader for less than £30 and cancel the codes yourself. If you do get one be sure to read the code before cancelling as it will tell us what happened;

:P @ bothy lol

the engine management light has cleared itself now...so we can save ourselves £35.00 + VAT by NOT taking her to Mr T and asking him to clear it.....rather spend the 30 odd quid on the OBD11 reader ; and if it happens again, well we will cross that bridge etc etc. Plus Simon said that the error code should be stored so we can see what it is once we get the OBD11 :)

cheers guys, your info is invaluable, except yours bothy cos really your jealous cos we 5 door drivers dont have to make any effort to enable people to get into the back seats of our Rav's :P

    My RAVs back seats are where they should be - on a shelf in my garage!!!

My we'ens have their own transport and live elsewhere; and if I want to transport live bodies, then I use the minibus - a vehicle eminently suited to walking into it to sit down in an elegant fashion.....means they don't need tae make ony effort either! And as ma propane bomb is so tall, ye can see ithers and they see me so there's naw ay they mess cos ahm mental!!

no stabbing here, but I've done the 3 door, performance car bit n carnt be ubikd with it any more......amongst the myriad of other cars we have owned, instead of small n nippy (R5GT turbo, Renault 172 Cup, Smart Forfour Brabus) or sleek and powerful ( Subaru Impreza, Supra TT) we're going for big and bullying with our lovely Rav. I gotta be honest I was seriously considering a 3 door to begin with, but needed more boot space and cos the youngest kid has a pony that is stabled near dartmoor, we wanted summat more practical (can't believe I am using that word in relation to a car) that she wasnt going to wreck beyond recognition with her muddy boots and general all round filthiness ;)

See - a jist kent that. 3 fawk in the RAV an a bldg pony!!! Whitever next?? Makes sense that ye dinna hae tae pu a horsebox tho so I can sympathise wi that. Ye cuid try tying the pony ontae the back wi a bungee cord. Course ye'd need tae take a poop scoop bucket....phew

damn Rav done it again friday grrrr

same sitch.....up a hill bout 2500 - 3000 revs in third gear and the EML came on and ravy dropped into creep home mode, i pull over, turn off engine...wait a few secs, restart engine and its ok duh! after about 5 restarts the light clears. whilst the EML is on however, the performance of the engine is quite temperamental...with occassional jerkiness when accelerating. once the light is out it back to powering. Incidentally the engine has been cold each time this has happened and its only when going up a hill at a reasonable speed and in thirs gear.

we're gonna invest in a OBDII unit so at least we can diagnose what the prob is...and its a tenner cheaper than taking it to Mr T ;)

   At 21st you can guess how tough it is!!! Still don't remember my petrol RAV having that problem....then again the propane Jaguar had a mind of its own and would normally revert to crawling in the middle of a traffic lights junction.

I guess your car is trying to tell you something - can't help you tho as I don't speak dieselish

Sure its not one of yer many doors coming loose???
