How do you remove engine from car with auto transmission?

Many Thanks

Well its a big job but providing you have a good selection of tools and some lifting equipment it is possible as long as you are reasonably competent. Can you update your profile so that we can see what model you have?

What is the model of your Rav4? Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3?

If you reply with the age of the RAV, and if its a diesel or petrol, 5 door or 3 door.

The engines on these cars drop out the bottom - means undoing the mountings while car is accessible then raising it carefully from the engine/transmission. Some garages have managed to get the engine out the top but it means severe surgical procedures then following that, welding the front back on.

The procedure differs a bit depending on the age of car, hence why some of ma southerly colleagues ask vague questions. Mk1/2/3 really relates to the date of manufacture - and the change in engines.

The original RAV sold from about 1994 in the UK had the 3SFE 1998cc engine. Much of the design/components came from the Corolla I think altho the 3SFE engine was used in others. The change from the 3SFE engine marked the change to the so called Mk 2 RAV, around 2001 or thereabouts.

The position is complicated if the RAV is a more recent import from Japan, as there is one member who has a 3SGE engine fitted which is not common to the UK.

The fundamental thing is that most if not all of the engines drop out the bottom having removed some or all of the suspension/subframe.

What is it that you intend to do???

aw jeeez - nasty wan. Altho yer RAV is 9 years younger than mine, I think its still the same - drop the engine oot the bottom. However there are some clever mechanics who can do a lot of the work with the engine in situ - normally they'll work on Jap cars. From what you say, it sounds as if the crankshaft et al has wrecked in which case it'll be cheaper getting hold of an engine from a write off. Cost of rebuilding the engine is not cheap unless you know someone.

The method of dropping the engine is ok to those used to most Jap cars. UK manufactured car mechanics have a vision of being able to get the engine out the top no matter what!!! (It happened to me). They cut the front half off!!! Then welded it back together!!!

I believe its easier to take them both out as a wunner. Then its more easily separated.
