Knocking Sound On Tickover

Hi all,

I recently posted that i was getting a rattling noise on tick over, thanks to all who responded.

an update.

i was sure that the noise was coming from the front of the engine (on the left standing at front looking under bonnet), so to test this i removed the belt at the front of the engine, then started it up (i know, only ran it for a few mins), and no noise at all.

i put the belt back on, rattling returns.

am i right in thinking that it is either the power steering pump or the water pump ?

i put a bit of dowling onto the power steering pump and the water pump and the noise seems louder on the power steering pump.

any advice appreciated :-)

Hey there ,

well i have a similar noise.i would not say it is a knocking more of a light tinny ratlle. it seems to dissapear when the engine heats up. although when i rev it gets louder. you may wonder wher i am going with this but i see that you may have narrowed the noise down to where the power steering pump is. Now when i do full lock on a cold morning it sounds like i have causght a cat in it. as in it screeches like a be-atch. but the screeching and tinny rattle both sissapear when the engine heats up. i know its not a solution but it might help you narrow down the problem. also an neighbour of mine has the same year and model of my avensis and i can hear the same noise coming from his

Yes it could be described as more of a rattling. mine just happens on tickover, once engine revs go over 1000 then it stops.

putting it in garage tomorrow so will update with what they tell me.

I am just hoping its the powersteering pump, as the water pump looks to be a git to get at :-)

only one belt, just not easy to get at as its under the power steering pump :-)

Is your rattle coming from the same area, as i was informed in an earlier post that it could be the dual mass flywheel on the clutch?

ok had a quick read....... the plot thickens. in cold weather if i make hasty gear change the car judders. i put that down to engine mountings (had ford focus with soft mountings had similar juddering symptom) but with noise and all maybe making more sense

oh dear. i rang around to see how much to fix that, all the quotes were over £500 :-(

they have quoted me max of £350 (for lab and parts) for either the power steering or water pump, they have said that the power steering pump would be the cheapest, as its easier to get at.

Might be worth finding a garage that does free quotes and getting them to check it out?

it was a case that ignorance is bliss..... i hate this website ha ha ha. i have screechy steering but i put that down to the pump. and it was a case that it made noise but also still worked. so if it aint fully broke dont fix it....... but likie most things the sooner you deal wit these things the cheapr/easier it is to fix.

screecing noise from the engine will normally be a pully belt which is over tightened/ belt not taught to manufactures spec.

the water pump wont make these symptoms, i will defo put my money on the powersteering pump,

However, every avensis power steering pump i have seen fail, always starts to make a groaning noise when you try to turn the wheels.

You can replicate this problem with low air in your tyres. (puts a lot of stress on the power steering).

should make your power steering goran.

I would look at changing the fluid... (cheaper option)

@ puppie, the juddering is most likley from the clutch. take it easy when cold.

Picked up the car from the garage today

:-(

They replaced the tensioner pulley as the bearing had gone, They spun it up with an air tool and you could hear that it wasnt right. (£107 +vat from toyota!)

however, the noise was still there, rattle on tick over.

They have now confirmed that it is the clutch on the aircon pump. once aircon is engaged, noise dissappears. however, part is £650ish +vat from toyota, and they dont do the clutch as a seperate item (typical)

So i got car back, paid £172 and it still has the !Removed! noise !

My question, anyone know where i can get a cheaper aircon pump ?

is there a cheaper solution available?

its for a 53 plate t4d

Air con clutch that is cheep compared to peugeot. I was picking up a 206cc that we sent in for new micro switches on the folding roof. The chap infront of me had a 406 wanted a new air con clutch. Again you cannot just buy the clutch its a whole unit. They was talking in the region of 1k. I'm startin to think are both units made by denso cos they are a big player in car air con units. Ok there biggest share holders are toyota and honda but they do supply PSA (peugoet and citroen)

hi all

i have the very same problem on toyota avensis 05 d4d

the knocking noise is coming from inside the timing belt cover area of the car.

as soon as i bring the revs above 1000 revs the noise stops and the engine sounds great or if

i put the air con on the noise stops but i think thats only because the revs go up with air con on.

if it was the big end bearing would the knocking be there all the time or would it come and go.

any ideas

thanks
