Avensis Clutch Not Working

I have just fitted a new clutch in my X reg avensis 1.8 vvti. The problem is the gears are selectable when the engine is not running. But no good when the engine is running. I have bled and bled the hydraulics and still no good. I can put it in gear and start the engine but there is no biting point on the clutch. It is biting all the time. I have been told it might be the seals in the slave or master cylinders. Any advice welcome.

Thanx?????

Can you see the slave piston activating when an assistant presses the clutch pedal? Is the travel less that 1"?

To 'coincidently' have a problem with your slave or master at the same time is unlikely. The fault will be with air in the hydraulics or the fitting. Are you sure that the thrust bearing was correctly seated on the cluch fork?

My first advice would be to compare the travel of your slave piston with that of a similar vehicle. Someone on the site may be able to assist. My car is being resprayed at the mo unfortunately.

Bleeding cluch systems can sometimes be alkward. To clear the slave of air I would recommend forcing the piston rod inwards at the same time as an assistant presses on the pedal.

Remove the clutch lever boot and shine a torch into the transmission housing to satisfy yourself that the thrust bearing is seated correctly.

Failing the above....... its pull the whole thing apart!

Hi, Thanx for the reply,

The slave cylider rod was moving less than an inch, I will try your suggestion on bleeding the hydraulic system and check the thrust bearing is seated ok tomorrow.

If anyone knows what the travel distance of the cylinder rod should be I will be grateful, thanx. I cannot find it in the haynes manual???

What I did find was that when I forced the clutch lever arm away from the slave cylinder the gears could be found almost perfectly??? as if the slave cylinder was not pushing the lever arm far enough to operate the clutch correctly.

Sure the pressure plate is the right way around.(with the raised side facing the gearbox). I will check the fork tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice.

Toyota clutch was spot on. Fitted it exactly the same as the copy clutches. Lesson to be learnt: Dont buy copy goods, buy GENUINE.

Thanks all for your help.

regards

Paulebb

PS. does anyone know where I can download the owners manual for my Avensis? and the sat/nav instructions?

Again all help is gratefully recieved.
