Headlight Problem

Hi

My headlight bulb went yesterday so I went to replace it only to find that the plastic part that holds the bulb in place on the back of the light has actually melted away from the headlight, I had a quick search on the forum and there seams to be a problem with condensation in the headlights as well. I have just checked and I have noticed my other headlight has some condensation. I read as well that they could be replaced under warranty but my problem is I have covered 110k miles so I take it this means I will have to Shell out of my own pocket? The car is a 2004 Avensis T4 D4-D I almost forgot to add that :)

Thanks alot

-Josh

I went to buy a headlight bulb yesterday and was told they would fit it for me but then said they had to take the bumper off to do it and charged me £40 labour plus £20 odd pounds for the bulb. Was I "conned" ?

Dropping the bumper (I believe they loosen a few bolts/screws and let it drop a bit) is apparently the way the dealer do it.

I can not argue with the charges. There are other threads re changing bulbs, I idid it in 30-40 min's, fiddly but it can be done

and I will not hesitate to do it again.

I was asked for a £ 5 simply to cover the cost of the bulb. Mr. Toyota (Lindop Brothers) did not ask me for anything else. In the end I did not have to pay anything as they realised that the previous bulb change had not been done properly (someona had touched the glass it with bare hands). I guess it depends on the dealer/garage. But £ 60 for a bulb change is way to expensive IMHO. The guys at Totoya changed the bulb in no time (less than 5 mins, as I could not finish an e-mial I had started to write). Even at their hourly £ 72.5 there is no way this would amunt to £ 40.

Cheers!

This is yet another thread on the now widely reported headlight issue. I have just had one of my headlights replaced by the dealer after severe condesnation and eventual burn out of the dipped beam. The dealer replaced it free as it was under a 1 year used car warranty. It seems that condensation eventually causes the lamp to fail. The Toyota dealer said they had no directive from Toyota to replace under warranty unless it was a "defective lamp." Seems that they have yet to recognise the condensation problem as a defect.

I must admit the problem has caused me to re-think Toyota as a rock solid reliable brand. Had Toyota readily admitted the condensating lamps as a manufacturer's defect and fixed the problem a lot of faith would have been restored. My '53 plate Avensis may well be my first and last UK sourced Toyota. I have owned 4 Camrys in the past and all were faultless.

The headlights do seem to be an issue, don't they. I bought a t3-x on a 53 plate 3 months ago. when i bought the car i mentioned that one of the headlights was misted up. the dealer (minories in durham) said they'd fix it no bother. i installed uprated bulbs a couple of days after i'd bought the car. fiddley as funk, but i wasn't gonna pay the dealer to do it so i just persevered! i was just glad i was able to get the connector off the back of the old bulbs. they popped right off no problem, so it made the fiddleyness not so bad...

I spoke to my local dealer and they refused to replace the lights due to being over 100k miles :( (sorry for the delayed update)

I had change the light on my '05 Avensis under guarantee of course, but I noticed condensation in the brand new light few days after the replacement. It was right after a car wash. I guess you 're right, there is a defect. But unlike other car dealers - here in Greece at least - they had no doubt they had to replcace it. But I can stop thinking what will happen after my warranty expires...

There is a known prob with these headlights. Unfortunatly the waranty extension parameters are 5yrs or 100.000 miles which ever occurs sooner. A call to customer services at TGB might help, but no gaurantee..

I had the same problem. Toyota have extended the warrantee on headlamps to five years as there has been problems. Take your car to a dealer and ask them to replace both headlamps under this warrantee

When fitting the new modified headlamps, it is important to make sure you fit the modified backing cover that goes with it, or if you have fitted a new bulb, make sure the cover is re-fitted properly, otherwise, you will get condensation forming again

Kingo
