i been though the mill with my cars of late. i had a fiat coupe 20v untill last week when the bonnet flipped up in to the windscreen at 60mph....and then is was bin material

i didnt have much money to spend as there was no insurance pay out. so i got another Mr2!! its a UK spec 1993 rev 2 mr2 its a blue/green color and i love it!

I got it cheep because there is a known faulght with it. the droplinks are nackerd on the back end causing some intresing handling characteristics (***** scary) so i got to get that fixed. i have done them before on my last mr2, I forgot were i got them from though

any one give me any tips? they were a jap spars specialist. and there website was far from pretty??!

Cheers,

Sam

Yo! Welcome back Sam.

Sounds like it might have been Twosrus from the sound of it, though I think the site has had a re-vamp recently.

Why not get a price from Parts-King, or have you tried Mr T before for these?

ok, i had drop links go on me before but this is different, he said after he did the lower ball joint on the back of the car it developed the problem

the back of the car is VERY unstedy and wanders left and right when i go over a bump. i know the drop links defontly need doing. could it be anything else......... the bloke has been very honest with me and i have no reason to not beleve him. he said if its anything more than droplinks i can take it back. its not been in a acedent ither

Idears?

What's the weather like over there Sam?

Incredibly windy here; if it's the same where you are that might be making the problem seem worse than it is.

My MR2 is somewhat twitchy in these conditions, though that could be a problem with my car perhaps. Never driven another one to compare it against.

windy as hell! but thats not it, it does feel like wind has taken the back of the car really really hard. but i can actually make it do it by hitting the accelerater over a bump, or just going over a bump,.......

i driven 2 other mr2's in the past. non of them did this. its worth noting that the front of the car is solid and not twitchy or making any banging noises

The arb may be twisted? This would mean one corner is permanently in tension. Going over any bump would certainly than give interestng handling characteristics? Simple enough to check once the drop links are released.

As to how an arb would get twisted?????......

Did the previous keeper change the ball-joint as a result of general wear or was it due to a curbing? If the latter the rear geometry may need checking

Fair enough, I'd just be aware that when the back end goes light over a bump then wind that previously wasn't a problem can suddenly be an major issue. And it's perhaps a combination of factors. Take it easy in this weather though - a known handling problem and high winds can't be a good combination, especially in a MR car.

What are the tyres like - could they be a factor?

Be interested to hear what the problem is when you do get it sorted. Good luck.

im going to get it up on the ramps this weekend. i dont have time over the next few days...and i dont need the car. if any one has any idears, be it worn track road ends, ball joints, or purly a issue with the drop links. it actualy feels like the back wheels have gone of on a trip all of there own on occasions!!

needless to say its going no were till its met my standards of fixed!

i find the handling of the Mr2 very reassuring usaly. its flat, not much over or under steer with out real course. unlike the fiat coupe i had, very heavy front end. and a little to pointy for my liking

hmm, had all the weels of today. no play from anything. there is a small amount of movment on 1 of the droplinks. But nothing huge. Ill do them anyhow. springs and shocks are ok. front shoks will need doing in the next 10k probaby. the tiers were under inflated on the back of the car. I put more air in. The car got better but its still like a jelly.

I went to quickfit who have adviced me that its 4 weel tracking on these. There all ajustable. They didnt have the equipment there to change it with out messing up the camber. the did however tell me that the rear weels were tracking in by 15mm each. and the front left was tracking out by 5. im going to get it tracked in this weekend.

any one here know more about this than me tell me is 15mm going to make the car basicly handle like it should be in some kind of mental asslem. I driven lots of mr2's and non of them have ever felt like this

Mine was very prone to tram-lining and had slightly uneven tyre wear so I had 4 wheel align done by Mr T for about £70 (less 10% discount + VAT)

It's much better now, and handles beautifully on twisty roads, but as I said earlier still can be a bit skittish when it's windy.

im getting it done for 40 as a faver :) . i know what you mean. its got to be driven to be beleved. i driven lots of cars, and lots of more powerfull cars. this isnt nice.

Ill give you a update after i got it tracked in on satiday. I may do the rear droplinks first however.

I was going to post some photos of it today. but its dirty now as i live down a country estate track.

finaly, when is the next meet? i can only see 2007 dates?

Yes, I think I'd do droplinks first; you don't want to upset anything after you've had it tracked.

Good luck with that, hope you get it all sorted.

Sorry, no idea on Meets as I only start to take notice once the weather gets better.

I know what this is as my car did this for nearly a year, it got so bad the rear used to steer itself when crossing white lines!

All I can say is its an arm with a hub on the end of it and it cost £140 a side from Mr T.

Hope this helps!

Problem solved. I was going to get it tracked in tomorrow (still might) any how. I new it was more than tracking so i took it in to the shrewsbury Toyota dealership as a last diched effors for some advice. I talked to the service counter who said it could be tracking. but before they just went and did it they would check it out first and take it for a test drive. I was given a coffe in the weighting area and tended to if i had a question. I saw my beloved mr2 go up on to the ramps and a toyota mechanic start poking stuff.

5 minits later the mechanic met me in the weighting area and asked me to describe the problem. after a quick conversation he then took me under the car and pointed to the X-Cross member at the back of the car. Basically your hubs bolt on to this via a bar. He pointed to a bold on the X member and said that was loose. I don't know what happened but i have tightened it up fo you. it should be ok now although i recommend you at very least get a new bolt

i was passed back though to reception wile my car was brought back around for me. I was then given a print out with all the part numbers i would need and sent on my way.....FREE OF CHARGE

I know they didnt actualy do a lot. But the point is they didn't have to do anything for me

I do honestly hope some one from the toyota dealership gets to read this. because the service i had off them today was quight frankly above exceptinal. I take my hats of to them for there quick, effeciant. and free advice

My car is no longer wildly skipping off in all directions

Also to you jappy beast. your diagnosis was spot on the mark, and to every one else who offered advice to

THANKS i can now love my Toyota again

Excellent news. Usually if a fault develops after replacing a part then the part replaced is probably the cause. Sounds like the lower ball joint wasn't fitted correctly by the previous owner.

My local Mr T is also very good for giving Free Advice.

RMB Toyota in Stockton.

Dealers aren't ALL bad.

your quight right. But at least i know what the problem is now. as regards the dealers, no there not all bad, the primarily problem with the dealers is the cost of the repairs. I was quoted 600 quid for the repairs!! more than the car is worth....

im in 2 minds now i know what the problem is, and can fix it with little cost i can re-sell it for more than i payed for it? any idears what there going for wiht no issues at the moment?

i was going to put some additional money in to it and get a rev 3?

im after a rev 3 tubby. As most of you know i had to give up my mast mr2 because of a opp i had. Thats why i got a Gt-4 and then a Fiat coupe (easyer to drive). I didnt want to go all out and spend a fortune on a tubby when i couldnt drive it.

I realy made the decesion today. I drove to the cost and back to see how much i liked it. I loved the drive but kept wishing there was a little more power. I would probably settle for a rev 3 T-Bar N/A they put out 176bhp, not the 148 (i think) that i have

I got the cross member sorted out this morning. Do you recon im asking to much for it. I put it at that price knowing i would be nokied down a little....
