Spare Wheel Cover

Hi chaps and chappesses!

have a question for all those parts peoples out there... Spare wheel covers? I don't have one currently and just have the cap thingy (girl language) that holds the spare on leaving my poor spare wheel naked to the elements!!! :( First question is it worth getting one? I know it will make Rowan prettier but are there any other benefits? Secondly are they tons of cash?

Thanks all, oh and if you remember I posted over Christmas about my brakes... I check my tyre pressures and they were really over pumped so with a little air reduction brakeability seems much better now :) Thanks for giving me the tips to check them out....

If you look at a recent post by a (un-named) member seeking a lock for the spare wheel cover, the address might give you the area where you can cruise around to nick one!!!

Alternative is to get one from a car being broken up due to accident - theres a few breakers around.

The new price quoted by Kingo looks quite reasonable and at least you'd know the cover is nice and shiny new.

good luck. Course if ye were really intae recycling, you could use a black used bin bag.....? Or cut the bottom off the neighbours wheelie bin?

In the pictures above...Why is the fog light above the number plate...UK RAV's have there's the other side above the exhaust...just a little observation I made...

Rowan...You can also get the vinyl type as well. Then get what ever picture on the back you desire...

My previous two 4x4s came with a vinyl cover which I took off - only replaced them when the car went onto its next owner. Keeping the cover on encourages corrosion of the wheel (even an alloy) due to the damp atmosphere (with higher salt concentration). The downside is that an exposed spare is receives more UV and will degrade faster; if all five wheels are rotated then it shouldn't matter but, if the spare isn't used, then an eye should be kept on it and, once it starts to show signs of degradation, should be replaced. However, this is unlikely to be a significant factor in northern latitudes, though still worth being aware of.

The Toyota rigid covers are better sealed than vinyls and, providing you take it off and wash the spare wheel down occasionally (especially at the end of the winter) corrosion shouldn't be an issue and it comes down to appearance. I keep the hard cover on mine as it looks untidy with it off.

On a side note, I think the new Rav4s without a spare look a bit bare at the back - I like having a spare and like to have it on the back (easy to get at when I need it and easy to check pressure, etc).

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your advise and feed back. If I'm lucky I may be in for a small bonus this month from work so I maybe in touch soon Kingo. Might sounds like a silly question but I'm assuming they come in a standard grey and I'd need to get it sprayed to match Rowan's colour?

Ask Dave.M about that one as he should have some paint after sorting out his debacle with a crash barrier. Dave - I have some spare CCTV cameras if you'd like to hand one from the rear bumper....?

I'm sure you can buy these, at least for 4.2, already colour coded

As mentioned before, check out a few breakers and you'll save a mint and be able to spend that bonus on something more fun :)
