T180 Niggles

Same here.

Picked up an '07 T180 at the weekend (yes i realise I've not given it enough time yet but it has already done 8k) and the change from 1st to 2nd is very 'clanky'.

The fuel consumnption is also a problem - coming from a Golf GTI with a quoted 35mpg (which was easily achieveable on a 10 mile motorway / a-road trip to work) the Rav has so far given 27.7mpg (quoted 40.2 i think) at best according to the trip computer - which is backed up by the fact that the 70 miles I've done so far have cost £13.50 in petrol. I wasn't expecting any sort of huge saving, but i certainly didn't expect my fuel bill to add early 1/4!

Apart from that though i am very happy with the car and don't really miss the GTI at all - although i do miss the 5 levels of heated seats rather than the on/off of the T180.

According to some reports the fuel consumption may settle down. Don't forget this is a ton and a half and you are probably still driving it like a golf away from the lights.

As for heated seats my XT4 doesn't have them and I would be glad of a hot water bottle on a cold morning!

Enjoy the car and welcome to the club.

Thanks for the advice Anchorman :D

To be honest I'm trying to drive as carefully as possible at the moment to see how high I can get the fuel consumption so as to convince myself I've done the right thing by swapping the GTI (not really needed as I much prefer the Ravs high driving position and quality of the vehicle). The Rav4 was previously owned by Toyota GB so I guess they'll have used it to show off how fast / quick accelerating etc it can be as well as letting the various emplyees take it out for a 'spin' - the fuel consumption average when i picked it up was 19mpg.

I'm sure I've read somewhere on here about how the trip computer works it out by averaging out the last few hundred miles regardles of when the trip reset button is pressed - Don't know how true that is but it would explain the current fuel figures.

Cheers for any advice

It will make a big difference if it hasn't been reset since you got it. Ignore what the trip computer is telling you in that case. Start by resetting it. Scroll around the different displays until you get to the fuel consumption and then press and hold it until it zeros. It will read rubbish for the first 100 miles or so then start to give some representative but not accurate info. You need to do the sums manually until you get used to it and then you will probably find that the trip is 3 or 4 mpg high.

Cheers

PS Don't worry you have done the right thing!!!

Once again, thanks Anchorman - was trying to reset the fuel consumption with the odometer button on the left and not the one on the right (didn't like to read the manual and thought it'd be the same as the golf!)

Averaged 35.5mpg according to trip on way to work this morning which is at least getting on in the right direction so hopefully over the coming weeks it'll get nearer the magic 40 if i drive it carefully.

I am gradually getting used to the change from 1st to 2nd although the rest of the changes are very smooth indeed. Not missing the GTI at all now and am certainly getting more admiring looks than i did in the golf!

Cheers

I am still in the honeymoon period with my T180, but there are a couple of things which are starting to bug me and I was wondering whether these are normal Rav traits or could there be something wrong. My RAV was registered in March 06 and has 10K miles on the clock.

1 - I find that when I am coasting in second and depress the clutch I sometimes here what I can only describe as a "clank" noise, I assume this is when the gear is disengaged. I havnt experienced this with any other car I have owned, but this is the first 4x4. Is this normal?

2 - Again maybe clutch related - The change from first to second gear is sometimes very stiff, as if the clutch is not depressed enough. Once in second, gears 2nd-6th are fine.

The previous owner has had a detachable to bar fitted so I was wondering whether towing could have caused these problems, although the car had only done 10K in 18 months.

I was looking through a previous service report and it states that a clutch fault was highlighted by the previous owner but nothing was found when investigated. With the horror stories around the DMF issue, alarm bells are starting to ring.

3 - Having previously owned a 110bhp Seat Leon before the RAV and achieving 55mpg I am very aware of my mpg. Currently I am not getting anywhere near the 40mpg boasted in the RAV4 brochure/technical spec, its more like 30-32 mpg, and I can honestly say that I am not "Razzing" it round the roads of County Durham. What sort of MPG are other T180 owners achieving?

All in all I am loving the car, I was just wondering whether I should getthese little problems checked out while under warranty.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

YES I GET THE CLUNKING NOISE. MILEAGE WISE I GET 33-35 MPG. BUT I WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT YOUR FUEL COSTS. ESPECIALLY ONCE YOU GET STUNG FOR A SET OF NEW RUN FLAT TYRES!!!:wacko::wacko:

KEGS - exactly right! I have even got a "Run Flat Tyre fund" on the go just incase!

Has anyone heard if Mr T is doing anything to address this issue?

I am averaging 35-36 mpg at the moment..not too bad..I can live with that!

Still loving the car!

I also own a Lexus 250 Auto and on the Lexus forum the diesel owners have the same MPG problems, many have had the 5th injector replaced under warranty and now report much better MPG. The 250 petrol auto averages about 33-35 and the 180 diesel 34-36 so cant blame the weight of the car.

There is an ongoing case with the run flat tyres which 'might' lead to some changes, as it's ongoing I can't provide too much information at the moment! ;)

Interesting!! Would these changes be applied retrospectively, should they occur?
