New User With 98 Corolla Liftback & A Question!

Corolla CD

Yesterday i picked up a 1998 ® Corolla 1.6CD Liftback in superb condition with only 60k on it (fsh), it's a bit of a dodgy colour but it was too good to turn down as i'm after a cheap reliable car due to my wife being 7 months pregnant!

So far i'm well chuffed, it's got all the toys and airbags i want and seems to be ok to drive and fairly quiet, just got a few bulbs out in the dash to sort but other than that i haven;t noticed any problems!

Today i figured out how to change the Headunit (via the vents!) for my Alpine MP3 / Ipod one but found out that the standar Speakers aren't up to much at all.

I'm not after earth shattering base or anything just a nice clean sound with a bit of punch.

What size are the standard Speakers in the front. I'm thinking about replacing then with some components but don't want to do any cutting as i want to keep the car as standard as possible.

I would also be replacing the rear at some stage so anyone know what size these are (i haven't even looked for their location yet!!)

Many thanks

Mike

i've fitted sony speaker all round in my corolla e11 hatchback. i used 10cm in the rear and they fit 3 of the 4 current holes (for screws). the front Speakers are actually about 15cms in diameter but you need to buy the smaller 13's for the front and mount them on a custom frame (i used plywood) which you can then fit to the original speaker holes. You have to drill out the front Speakers as they are riveted in.

hope this helps

That's great thanks, i had seen it was 13cm in the front so wanted to double check. I'd rather not take the door card off to measure and then take it off again to fit the new Speakers when i can order them first and only take the panel off once!

How mid you attach the plywood to the door, do the original holes take self tappers ok?

Hi

I have just started changing all of my Speakers, The fronts were 5 1/4" and i have put 5" back in from a previous car that I modded.

I have not replaced the rear yet as I only did my head unit yesturday morning and the woring loom for my sub hasn't arrived yet.

Now that you say the rears are 10cm I am really debating just taking them out and finding another parcel shelf to cut out for 6x9's and amplify them. Don't think I will get enough power out of the 10cm even when replaced.

Only thing is, I cannot see how to get at the rear Speakers. I also want to know how you got the power lead out of the car into the engine bay as I cannot find a hole.

P.S. I have the longer version of the Corolla :( not the nippy hatchback but it's still a hatchback :)

This is not mine but it's the same shape COROLLA - I don't really know how to tell people what the shape is without explaining.. do I have a code like the E11 for example as this is the shorter car :P

yes yours is an e11 (ae111 to be precise) i cheated when i fed my power line from the Battery to the boot. I fed it through the gap between the front offside wing and the door, i then put it under the plastic door sill then under the carpet through to the boot. on my car (the 3dr) i had to lift up the hole plastic section covering the grill, it was easier when i put the seats down.

Cheers mate, I was thinking about doing that with a novelty horn I bought many years ago but I never felt it was worth it just for a Rainbow Horn (which is still boxed)

Ahh.. did you have to take off your inner arch to do this by the way?

I am just awaiting my Sub now and wiring and then I can wire it all up.

I am making a plug socket in the boot to as I need all of my boot space so often that i want to take it out easily so I have done this before in a mini and now i am doing it so that i can just unplug my sub and amp and remove them. (Also explains why I have the longer version as I preffered the shorter and owned one but needed a bit more space)

cheers again

Do you know how I get to my rear Speakers?
