2003 Corolla 2.0 D4d Problem

Hi Guys, new to the club, but a Toyota fan currently on my third Toyota Corolla estate, so I like 'em.

Well hopefully somebody can advise me on a problem (which I suspect is the thermostat).

I own a 2003 Corolla 2.0litre D4D estate, which recently seems to stay at high revs/warm up for 10-20 minutes from cold start (especialy when its really cold out).

I have recently fitted an electronic tuning chip to up the power/improve the mpg, as it was a little underpowered being only 89bhp standard. (Later models were 116 bhp after i bought mine!).I don't think this is the problem/cause?

I did some web searching and came across this, which is the identical fault and the same model engine so is this a common fault?

And where is the thermostat on the 2.0litre D4D engine?

Any advice much appreciated.

Mike.

I think the slow thermostat issue on the D-4D is a "feature" as mine does exactly the same and another forum member has also pointed this out. It also takes an age to return to zero when stopped.

My revs also go to 11-1200 but this is due to putting on the front screen defrost on cold weather.

Another thing I've noticed during cold weather start-up is a dull thumping sound (like a pump) from somewhere underneath the passenger seat. I mentioned it to a dealer and they thought that it was normal ie how the engine deals with cold weather starts. Not sure whether this was a fob-off but 2.5 years the car still runs well.
