2 Bits Of Black Plastic On Steering Wheel - Want To Paint Them

Hi guys,

I want to paint the two black bits on either side of the steering wheel.

Question is how do I get them off? I gave them a good pull and they are solid on there! I did not pull too much incase I broke something.

Any know if they just pull off or are they part of the steering wheel that do no come off? :help:

I want them silver like in the picture below.

Cheers

I've thought about doing the same thing, but likewise i have no idea how to get them off!

They look like they are fastened within the steering wheel.

Having my car serviced Thursday so i can always ask the question.

I 'think' you need to remove the airbag to access the fittings for these plastics.

Airbag is held on with 2 torx screws through the back of the wheel.

If you even think about removing the airbag be very careful :o

Disconnect the Battery and leave the car for at least half an hour to allow all circuits to 'drain'.

Be very careful handling the airbag and remove it from the outside of the car - do not sit in the seat to do it.

Gently place the airbag away from the car where it will not get knocked.

When replacing follow the same guidelines.

It might sound over the top but these things can cause injury if they go off and you are handling them.

Well, i asked the question today.

You do need to undo the two bolts on the back of the steering wheel, this however, should not affect the airbag.

He did add that this should allow the two pieces to be removed, as he's not done it he was unsure exactly as to how they are attached.

I did stress the point over the airbag and he stated that the airbag is separate and undoing the bolts should not affect it.

So i guess the only way to know for sure is to do it!!

If the 2 bolts/screws he is talking about are on the back of the wheel these are the 2 that you undo to remove the airbag - FACT :P

You will need to remove the airbag to get to the plastic cover fixings im sure of it. As said above be careful with the airbag (you dont NEED to disconnect the Battery but it will make it alot safer if you havent removed airbag before) Also dont pull on any of the wires too hard, if they dont come out easily just take your time.

The 2 philips screws you can see pointing away from you when you turn the steering wheel left and right hold the upper and lower of the column shroud together, and you don't need to touch. Closer to you and around the back lower edge of the steering wheel body and are 2 access holes to get a torx bit into. Undo them and wiggle the horn pad a bit and you can remove it enough to disconnect the airbag wires. Not sure, but I think those bits you want are heat-staked (or similar) into position - non-removable.

You are a brave man. :P

A steering wheel is very expensive though! but if you do mess it up that would be a good excuse to buy the TTE sports steering wheel!

you shouldn't need to undo the airbag connection (if you do without disconnecting the Battery DO NOT TURN ON THE IGNITION. it will bring up an SRS fault code which will need the dealer to reset).

there should be enough cable to allow the air bag unit to move out of the way. IIRC there are 1 or two screws that hold the plastic bits on but is a while since ive seen the wheel minus airbag

if anyone needs help the best i would suggest it use cling film and newpaper with a card to get it in and secure take your time as for the buttons blue tack and masking tape carefully around them and then spray in a quick layer and then again cover things. I done know whether to do some other parts. anyone got suggestions of what else to spray i dont want it over the top but i do want a bit more blue in the car as i do think it looks weird with blue not covering the whole dash. Where the air condition dials are i cant spray that because of the dials being on and its a sticker if you remove the sticker there are holes which show the ac and stuff.

i was thinking of getting a carbon fibre roll and cutting it to the other parts of the interior neatly as the standard plastic doesnt show with the blue to well. But i need a bit more flash coming in. The steering wheel cover which i am going to do i will also show to make the steering look thick and sporty neatly stitched around the original.
