How Hard Isn It To Replace A Snapped Cambelt On A Mk1 Rav4

Was looking at a Rav4 with a snapped cambelt, how hard is it to do? Is there some sort of write up how to do it? I tried the search function but didn't come up with anything.

Where would be best to get a belt kit? as I'll be replacing the tensioners and maybe the water pump too. Is that all advisable to do at the same time.

Can anyone recommend someone in London to do the work for me?

Before you go shelling out money on that you need to carefully turn the engine with a socket or spanner to see if it still turns. Some engines allow the pistons to hit the valves if the belt breaks and then you might be into a new engine. If the engine turns freely through 360 degrees with the plugs out then you should be OK. Most good motor factors can supply parts or our resident parts supplier Parts-King will ship them to you at a discounted rate.

Its quite a big job but if you have a reasonable selection of tools and some knowledge of engines then it is possible. If you are lucky Bothwell Buyer will scan you the info from the manual as it is not on the website.

If you are unsure then entrust the work to a garage. You will have to wait for a recommendation or put a post in the "general" section to identify somebody in your area.

Yes - if that is the case. As you have stated, it is worth checking all the driven auxiliaries to make sure they didn't contribute to it breaking. Any doubt replace them.

Well depending on how lazy I am I'll just try it on the starter motor and see if it turns.

Then see the cost of a cambelt kit, water pump, themostat, crank and cam seals.

I'll scan the pages of the manual i have - it was produced for the USA market but its the same - 3SFE engine up to 2000 model. Theres about 4 pages or so with pictures.

I'd a leaking crankshaft seal from around 120,000 miles until the engine seized thru oil starvation. Wisnae me said the daughters!!

The 3SFE engine was used on the Corolla I think it was anyway- so there might be non-toyota parts around. Doesn't look to difficult - more of a hassle. Course its important to put it all back together again properly to make sure the timing isn't changed!!

It'll be nearer midnight before its done as I've a few things to do outside yet! Shift caravan to access trailer etc.....and its raining which is a nuisance - its a beast of a caravan!!

Sorry but the first page is upside down - I didn't check after scanning so you'll either need to stand on your head; turn the screen upside down; or save the image and turn it round. It should be high enough quality to be able to zoom into the page. However the images are large - about 2mb I think.

Wot dya expect - Konica Minolta - probably made in China..... a C250 model...I'd the engineers out last week cos one of the castors fell off - a £10,000+ machine and a castor falls off - well ah mean!! Now, wheres the KM Forum for disgruntled upside down customers??
