Broken Timing Belt

I have a toyota collora 130i , 1999 model. Yesterday as i was doing some 60 kmph the timing belt got broken and the engine went dead instantly. I manged to get the car to a halt, though at that time i din't know what had gone wrong. When i had come to a halt i tried to crank the engine to no avail and i decied to call a local mechanic to check the car. That's when he told me that the timing belt had broken. After replacing it, the engine managed to start ok, but the pulling isn't satisfactory more especially when am doing a hill climb/ i.e. driving against a slope.

I am really puzzled by this development. Could there be a problem with the engine of the car? Please help before i take it back to the local mechanic.

Perhaps the timing belt has been incorrectly positioned (maybe one tooth out?).

Make sure all the marks line up at TDC.

Was the distributor adjusted at the same time? Maybe ignition timing is off.

I would take it back to the mechanic.
