Is My Rav Poorly Sick?

Morning all...

I hope you have all been enjoying our lovely weather! NOT! On the way to work this morning Rowan's Engine Management light randomly came on... I didn't stall him(despite being a girl!!! ;) ) I didn't do anything thing honest! I was just sat there in some traffic and all of a sudden the little yellow light popped on... My manual is a home where I was reading up on tyre pressures so not able to read up on what it could be... I drove to work with no loss of power or anything, he just felt completely normal. Will phone mechanic but have any of you clever boys and girls got any ideas on what it could be? Did drive through some big puddles at silly o'clock on the way back from doing pony this morning before I went to work but light didn't come on then. Only strange thing I did do was hit one of the door fob buttons and the alarm went off when getting in to go to work but sorted that with pressing the right one... Rambling now but worried Rowan is poorly....

Fanx boys... and girls...

Looking at your past postings you have the same 2 litre petrol engine as me. You need to beg , borrow , steal or buy a fault code reader to find out the fault code. Failing that any decent garage should be able to read it and maybe reset it but you may have to take it to Mr T or a specialist depending on what the fault is. (Mr T will charge you more to check the code than it costs to buy a reader) My own is eating oxygen sensors at 200 quid a throw , they have a tendency to go open circuit in the heater element but it could well be something else. Have a search on the forum.... The other thing is it may clear on its own if it's just a sensor needing to go through the initialization process but worth getting it checked if it doesn't.

Well I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

The yellow light has three modes;

Unimportant fault - comes on momentarily (like yours) fix when convenient

Important fault (go to garage) - light stays on

Urgent fault (don't drive) - light flashes

You can get yours read when convenient but you might find it just needs a service and the mixture or manifold pressures are just going out of range.

You haven't been feeding it carrots or hay have you?

Hey pmb,

Thanks for replying... oh goodness I hope it's not the oxygen sensors.... my mpg has been dropping recently, only very slowly but since I've had it it's gone from 31.9 to 29.4... so guessed it could be a lambda probe. Speaking to my mechanic today he said this is quite a common fault and he's had to do a few of these recently. He's got a fault reader and is able to look at it for me Thursday... given that it still seems to be driving ok I'm going to keep driving it... hopefully the engine won't fall out by Thursday!!! :( He's a bit cheaper than Mr T so lets hope he can fix him.

Once again thanks for your advise and I'll have a scan through the forum...

Hey Anchorman!!!

LOL LOL  .... I've tried him on hay and carrots but personally I think he prefers ginger biscuits!! :D Will check to see if the light is still on when I get in the car later.... it was on all the time earlier... mechanic is coming Thursday and I only have the one car... should I not drive him at all and to to straight to Mr T's, not pass go or collect £200? (sorry a slight slip into Monopoly then!!! :D ) He's driving ok, no smoke plumes from the back end or burning smells from the front and no loss of power....?

Oh god I hate being a girl with broken car... :(

Well I would keep going with it. If you are dead worried just call in at your garage and ask him to read it. It only takes a minute girl (cue dave for a song there). Should have given a clearer definition - go to garage at first opportunity - especially if it runs OK.

Don't worry. It does sound a bit oxygen sensorish to me and in that case you might struggle at MOT but they make tiny adjustments to the mixture and will run OK.

I love a bit of Take That... it's probably why Rowan is sick! ;) Ok, I'll keep hanging on in there until Thursday unless something drastic happens, and that's not my ears bleeding from too much Take That to loud!!! :) Is an oxygen sensor a bit like a lambda probe or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi all,

Car doctor has been and Rowan has a poorly sick lambda probe. Just waiting for a price and then he will be fixed... Feeling quite releived as I had the same problem with my golf and so know what it all entails.

Just to say thank you to all you guys for your advice once again... nice to know you are all out there with some helpful advice and wise words... and to make me chuckle!! :)

Rowan :D :D :D
