Remove Centre Console

Hi

I need to get behind the centre console (directly behind the ashtray, cigarette lighter) to replace a couple of audio cables on a Connects 2 Aux unit for my mp3 player.

Is removing the centre console on an Avensis (2001) an easy thing to do? Does the lower half come off by itself or does the whole thing need removing? Or am I better off taking this to a professional?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Rick

Hi Rick,

Don't take it to a pro it's dead easy to do, and yes it's the whole console. I have fitted the same thing to mine for my iPod, really easy. To remove the centre console, I found it easier to remove the ashtray first. Just open it, press down on the metal flap then pull it out. This will then give you enough room underneath to grab the bottom of the console. Give it a firm pull at the bottom and it should come out by about half an inch. Run your fingers up the sides of the console and the whole console should slide out by about half an inch.

Once you have done this lift up the entire console again by about half an inch to release the clips at the back, then it should just slide aout as far as the cables will allow. This bit is a little fiddly but not impossible.

From memory you'll need to unclip the alarm light (if fitted), rear demister button and hazard light button at the top before you can pull it out far enough to see the audio cables. All the cables going into the stereo are different sizes so feel free to pull them all out so you can see what you're doing, and where the Connects 2 box needs to go. There is loads of room down the left hand side for the box to sit and the cables are long enough so that they aren't in the way.

Are you plugging your MP3 player directly into the Connects 2 box? If so you shouldn't have any problems, but I also fitted a Harman/Kardon Drive and Play unit for my iPod and when I used both that and the connect 2 box it caused loads noise through the stereo. Both used separately they worked fine, but together really noisy. I got round this by fitting a ground loop isolator. Ground loop isolator from Maplin

Do you have the CD changer fitted? If so you need to unplug this in the boot, other wise it gets confused and plays the CD and the MP3 player at the same time. Thought I was picking up radio interference till I realised it was playing the CD very quietly.

Any other probs, give me a shout and I'll help out where I can.

Mike
