Luigi -

rear springs do go soft on the RAV. It costs mega to replace them. I went down the route of changing my shock absorbers for Koni adjustables. The rears are straightforward and I can describe the fronts if you wish. Having stiffened the damping action, I then had spring assisters fitted - a cheaper alternative than replacing springs. Its the sort of assisters you can buy to help when you are towing a caravan - stiffens the springs up and hey presto!! Theres a number on the market. If you get stuck, then Marc at The Garage in Wishaw replaced mine - www.The-Garage.co.uk - the email is on his website - they are moving to larger premises but mention he did it for my turbo RAV and he'll know what you're looking for.

Hope this helps. Come back to me if you've any problems with it.

Thanks guys , I just had my front springs replaced , don't know if you saw my other post but it was about a knocking noise that my RAV had whenever I turned the stering , turns out the front left spring had snapped on top , anyway that was around £250 , the same garage now gave me a quote for around £400 for the rear springs.

What are spring assisters ,probably obvious but I'm curious, do they fit inside the old springs or something like that ? Would it be too hard for me to do at home?

Also will the fact that the rear springs are soft affect the new springs at the front?

Thanks Bothy and Anchorman.

I am not sure but I think Toyota should have covered the cost of your springs under the recall at the front.

You'll know when the rear springs are done when the thing slumps down at the rear on acceleration. Spring assisters are very common for many cars - especially those that tow. I'll find out if they are easily fitted when I see the garage today. Told you the rear springs were expensive, and it still won't guarantee no slump if towing. They come in various shapes but are like rubber cushions which fit inside or over the springs. You also get them where they fit betwen the spring coils.

The affect you will have just now is likened to a ship in stormy seas.

If you go down to your nearest caravan parts shop or dealer, they will have a rubber assister which basically winds around the spring filling the space. Just jack the car up so the spring is extended and wind the assister on. Simple as that!!
