Hi Mrbilly...

As far as I know you are going to be out of luck if you have a UK 1997 Rav4... I have been down the same road with my 1998 Rav4 inquiring about this elusive OBD-II socket. The UK Rav4's were never fitted with them as it was not legally required in the UK as it was in some US States for the American version! From what I can gather the OBD-II sockets were only fitted to UK models after the 2000 model. The UK series 1 Rav4's were fitted with the DLC socket that is fitted next to the alternator under the hood (ok, bonnet), this apparently is an earlier (less sophisticated) version of OBD-II.

I am still trying to obtain info on what can be done with this DLC socket... I understand that by linking certain pins together you can re-set or read diagnostic codes? Perhaps Ian (Bothy) can illuminate our darkness on this matter? :)

The above is information that I have gathered from this forum and the US Rav4 forum, so I stand to be corrected on the above if anyone has more information.

Dave

haha - that's wot I like about the early RAVs....non o this high-follutin electronics.

I found the most complicated lectronics were the alarm systems ECU and related box.

From memory, I think I did post a link to a page of codes that Daveh mentions can be got from the socket under the bonnet.

There is no other port or connection. I've never used the connection that is there, and now with the 3SGTE, I ask the guys who did the conversion to look after the beast - they have all manner of diagnostic tools and laptops.

Prior to that, I don't think I ever needed to discover codes as I knew when something wasn't working - its a fairly simple machine compared to some stuff on the road!!

Take the Jaguar XJS - aye, jist take it. The elctrical connections are a nightmare with a poor connection causing all mannner of blips. The XJ40 was even worse and I eventually gave up on it.

I read the posts about R2D2 readers or whatever, and smile that I don't have that hassle. If the engine is not right I'll know before a code tells me. If a bulb is out, then either the local polis will tell me or as happened today various people flashed their lights as the trailer lights were u/s ( I knew but I had 150 miles to travel!!). So I put the hazards on as they were working and 3 folk indicated I had my hazards on. So no need for fault codes eh??

f you have an obd reader, either sell it to the 2 folk looking to buy one on this forum (see earlier recent posts) or practise on anchormans.

Is there anything niggling you re your RAV??
