Poor Performance?

Hi Guys,

Picked up my Yaris a 51 plate 1.0,

it seems really underpowered,im not expecting a hot hatch and ive driven smarts (mothers) and had an old Mini years ago and other small cars at times,so im used to small car and its output, but despite this is seems to really struggle on the uphill climb

With me and two small kids it really does struggle like 22-23 mph foot flat to the floor in 2nd

,the cars just been serviced and it runs fine other than this,is it normal for this model to be so poor?

Thanks

Sounds a bit unusual but they do need revving to get the best from the smaller engined models. A false economy, really! The 1.3 is a much better prospect, unless you are being hammered for your insurance.

I have to agree - the 1.0 does benefit from having the nuts thrashed off the engine. It's such a free revving engine, it's more like a motorcycle than a car, and can hold it's own against much larger cars. I've found our new 1.3 zinc a bit dissappointing by comparison, but then it's not even run in yet...

It's a 1.0, you've got to absolutely rag the balls off it if you want any form of performance. Don't be scared of the noise it makes because it sounds like you're killing it but it'll take a hell of a lot of abuse

Kev yes mate im adjusting but still a tad disappointed BTW i had a hire car for 3months,a Golf GT Twin charged, best car ive ever driven.1.4 but with a supercharger and a turbo, foot down in any gear and it went ,no lag no rev build up,135 0-60 in 7 secs and still 45 mpg.amazing cars.hope your having as much fun in your diesel, what do you get to a tank?

Yep, I've had it for over a year now & I still love it as much as I did when I 1st got it. The difference in power from the Yaris is unreal & as you touch on, no matter what gear I'm in & what rpm it's doing, I can just put my foot down & get instant acceleration. The Yaris was great for what it is but after 2 years of ownership I was sick of having to plan any moves in advance because I had to get the revs up, I just wanted to be spontaneous & in the Golf I can, the power is just there as soon as I want it.

I probably average around 40 mpg (about 470 miles from a full tank) in the Golf - depending on whether I'm mostly stuck in traffic or flying along on the motorway - which is very similar to the Yaris, can't help but smile at that considering the difference in performance

It should give okay power around that speed in 2nd, but keep in mind the power comes just before 4000 rpm in the 1.0, at least in the one I'm driving! I ain't that much for having the throttle down while going up the hill 'cause of the fuel inefficiency so wouldn't know exactly how much it does.

Keep in mind also it does 0-60 mph in like 15-16 seconds :(

The 1.0 loves revving so don't be afraid to give it some... after a while the ECU will get to know your driving style and set itself to suit, drive like a granny it will be a granny car.. give it some and it will soon learn your style.. and it will feel a lot better.

I found that the 1.0 vvti engine would out perform most other 1.0's and quite a few 1.2 engines if driven the way it likes to be driven.

Oddly it seems to have got a lot better with the same driving style, maybe it had been stood for a while or needed a good spurt to open it up but it does seem a lot better so far :D
