D-4d Starting Problem

I have a second hand Avensis 2004. past few months not starting from cold. Changed glow plugs and Battery problem still there. Had RAC man out he checked fuel no problem. Asked Local Mr T to look at under warranty. Wanted £90. Any ideas so am am not fobbed off. What could I look at to so the simple things are eliminated.

I had a similar problem on a 2.5 Diesel Frontera...

Changed glow plugs and Battery...(they needed doing anyway)

Tranpsired the fuel filter was extremely loose...

Once tighten, the fuel/air mix was as it should be.

Started ok from then on...

Other thing could be the oil viscosity..

Handbook recommends 5W 30 oil... especially for cold starting..

I have a similar problem to you.

From what I can gather the D4D starter motor can be problematic and can display these symptoms when failing.

My toyota dealer said it would be about 15 minutes to diagnose but I haven't had it done yet.

Apparently if it doesn't reach a certain flywheel speed the injectors will not fire, so i suppose being cold the starter motor may struggle against the friction of the cold engine.

That's how I see it anyway.

But sounds likes its alittle slow,

then it would be most likey starter motor

Hi I have a 2003 Avensis d4d T3s model. It starts up when cold. However after driving for a while and stopping/starting a few times, the car then refuses to start although it turns over. A push will get it going though.

If I dont push it I will Have then to wait for about an hour for car to cool down then it will start.

The glow plugs have been changed. Any Ideas

Thanks for time taken to resond the RAC man checked tightness of filter and found it was OK also fuel lines etc

i can see several first problems that are:

1. loosing of some control circuit contacts in wires when the engine is hot;

2. clogging of fine fuel filter (as a proof -- you give more fuel flow having pushed pedal);

3. poor el.contact with openning solenoid valve installed on the HP injection pump.

the glow plugs are OK thanks to the engine can be started.
