How Many Miles To A Full Tank?

Hi all,

Following on from my other thread about the petrol gauge....... i filled the tank right up to the brim and put the trip clock on....the needle is now just below half way and i've only done 180 miles :( :( :( that seems really really crap. I know its got a bigger engine than i'm used to but when looking at reviews before buying the Rav - i dont remember it saying it was poor on fuel economy?

Anyone advise on how many miles i should get roughly out of a full tank? 1998 Petrol Rav 4.1 model???

Thank you.

That might not be so bad snowy. The best thing to do now is to fill it up and work it out exactly. The gauge is by no means accurate enough to come to any conclusions.

When bothy flicks his afterburner he only gets to the end of the street on a tank of fuel. He can pass any Audi/AM/Ferrari supercar on the way though.

He was telling somebody to fit rubber bungie springs earlier. These are to get him back from the end of the street. If you come to warrington in May you can kick tyres and look at bothy's melted mirrors.

On mixed runs, with foot flat on floor most of the time I get 240+ miles from a tank of Shell Vmax or whatever its called. The tank is about 58 litres capacity.

Thinking back to the early days, I think we got around 28-30mpg depending on how it was driven (normally hard).

Remember that the RAV is 4 wheel drive all the time and at a 2 litre engine with 1st gear being very low to compensate for going off road, the nits not set up like a car. Try as mentioned - fill tank and work out mileage more accurately. The gauge is not accurate at all.

you'll probably laugh but I get 215 miles to a full tank in my 94 auto , is that normal/expected ?

I might be wrong, but that seems quite low. Assuming your tank hasn't been bent, then it should hold a max of 58 litres, altho you'd probably get about 50 litres in it when the warning low petrol light comes on. Have the MOT tests shown up any emission problems??

Easy way of checking for a rich mixture is to take a spark plug out - if its sooty and black then there's something amiss.

Well the front pipe does make one hell of a noise if I rev it up , would that affect consumption? I think it's 50 litres to fill up my tank but I'll get back to you on that as it's almost empty and I will fill up tomorrow or after.

I'll check the spak plugs , but I must buy a key for that right?

A hole in the front exhaust will make a difference to way the engine runs and could well affect petrol consumption.

from memory, I think the front pipe is prone to corrosion.

To save hassle, I'd take a run into one of the engine clinics that are around and ask them to give it a quick check re the air/fuel mixture in case one of the sensors is out/off. Ask them for a price first - the competition between them up here means they are quite cheap. It'll save you messing with plugs as well.
