Engine Management Light On Engine Dies

Hi

Been having trouble with this one since 1st Dec.

01 Avensis D4D Gs 112,000mls.

The engine management light comes on, and the engine cuts, like running out of fuel?

it's been in and out of Toyota Dealership 4 times, they say that they cannot find the fault and they have driven it and it has not happened to them.

Yet each time i collect it, in a matter of miles the engine goes again. Switch all electrics off and turn the engine on and it will start and engine light is off.

the fault seems to occur when, head lights, demister, radio and windows are used

in fact i can just start the engine and switch all these on and the fault occurs?

Has anyone come across anything like this? has anyone any ideas?

I am getting desperate :crybaby:

Ok,

Let me get this straight .... .... ....

1) car is running, and you turn on the headlights, demistor and windows, can the car stalls ?

First time i have heard of that, - answer the following

How old is your battrey ?

what voltage does the battry show, when the car is off ? It should show about 12v (the higher the better)

Is the alternator charging the battrey ? - (the battrey light on the dash board, does that go off, when you start the car, or stay on)

what voltage does it show, on a voltmeter, with the engine running ? (13 v ish again higher is better)

With the engine running, turn only the headlights on..

Does the engine struggle ? Yes / NO ? (mesure the voltage on the battrey, has it dropped below 12v or 13v? whats the reading.

Do individual tests on the items effected, ie rear dimister, then electrical window,

Us'ing them sepratly does engine stuggle ie cough splutter?

are all the EARTHS on the car/engine to body Battery to body in good shape?

Has Toyota, checked the main ignition switch, - these can turn faulty - can replicate odd problems

Has Toyota checked, the main D4D common rail pump on the engine to make sure it is maintain'ing the pressure needed for the injectors.

I only knew one car which showed similar probemss, but his car would not stall, but would go into limp mode,

for him the fault was the comman rail pump.

- As you turn on the electrics in the car, it will put load on the engine = the engine will work harder to keep up.

a bad battrey, or an earth could cause the problems.

I have to thank you for your very thorough reply.

Yes the ignition switch was replaced earlier last year. Battery was also replaced soon after I bought it.

( also bushes, water pump and due to a bang involving a raised manhole at un-signposted road works - a new sump, radiator, cross member and bumper)

Thankfully I brought it to a different Toyota dealership this afternoon, who listened to me, then found the fault in 30 min's and repaired the issue in another 30 min's - so the main root of all the stress for 6 weeks was the first dealership that it had been taken to.

As suspected there was an earth fault and the injector ECU was faulty which was thankfully replaced with a second hand part (€200 vs €600) whole job €250.

I will know to go to them if I have any further issues, 6 weeks of not having the use my car has cost me approx €400
